The Price of a Gamble is a ship flag cosmetic in Windrose, applied at the Shipwright to customize a player ship's flagstaff. The Price of a Gamble design is associated with Smugglers of Port Royal. Like every flag in the game it is purely cosmetic and changes no ship stats.
Fortune favors the brave, play it safe, and you'll die poor.
The line matches the Smugglers' wider risk-and-reward tone, echoing the faction flag's own motto about wealth weighed against death.

Bring the ship to a Shipwright-built Wharf and dock it. Open the Manage Ship menu, switch to the Customization tab, and select the matching flag slot. Price of a Gamble appears in the option list once the unlock condition is met. Reading the corresponding Style Book before opening the menu is important: if you browse the flag list first, the new design will not show up until the book is read. Applying a flag does not cost coin once the design is unlocked.
This design is unlocked by reading the matching Style Book: Smugglers Flag Designs, sold by the Smugglers of Port Royal Provisioner. Smugglers Style Books are priced in Guinea, not Piastres, with the faction flag book costing 10 Guinea, and the merchant's cosmetic stock unlocks only after your reputation with the faction reaches the required rank.
Reputation with the Smugglers is raised by turning in Insignias or Letters of Favor, which is also what opens the higher-tier merchant stock that lists the Style Book in the first place.
This cosmetic name appears in the database under the Brig-class entry, but the underlying design is shared across Brig, Frigate, and Ketch hull classes. Designs are bound to the character that read the Style Book rather than to one ship, so once it is read the option is available for every ship class that character has built or unlocked.
The flag is stat-neutral, so swap it freely without worrying about a damage or speed penalty. Choice is purely aesthetic.
Flags are visible to other players in both PvE and PvP, so flying a Smugglers design also signals which faction you currently run with at sea.
Style Books are one-time-read consumables bound to a character, not a base or clan. Crewmates who want the same flag must buy and read their own copy.

Price of a Gamble is one of the Smugglers' flag designs rather than a piece of gear or a crafting ingredient. Treat it as an unlock to chase once you are already trading with the faction: raise Smugglers reputation, buy and read the flag Style Book, then fly the design from any of your ships at a Wharf. Use the linked pages above to track the reputation grind, the Provisioner stock, and the related faction flags.
