The Foothills Temple Key is the key item required to unlock the Sealed Temple dungeon in the Foothills biome. Beyond the sealed door sits Israel Hands, the Foothills biome boss, plus an ancient chest containing some of the most valuable mid-game rewards.

The quest is handed out in the Foothills and runs across several connected objectives rather than a single fetch. In practice the path is: clear the Foothills pirate camps, deal with the vessel anchored offshore, search the camp near the temple ruins, gather the keys held by the camp lieutenants, then open the Sealed Temple and fight Israel Hands. Each lieutenant guards one key, so every camp on the marker has to be cleared down to its leader before the door will open.
The key is acquired during the Needle in a Haystack questline, the main mid-game quest chain that gates the Israel Hands encounter. The quest directs the player to Foothills pirate camps, where key items are looted from lieutenants and their crew members.
Community guides describe two phrasings for the recovery step, both pointing to the same mechanical path: either a single Foothills Temple Key looted from a specific camp, or three Ritual Keys looted from lieutenants across multiple Foothills pirate camps. In both cases, the player follows the quest marker to the active camp and looks for a chest or a dead lieutenant whose body yields the key item. One specific recovery step involves searching a dead pirate's pocket rather than a conventional chest.
The key opens the sealed door to the temple dungeon in the Foothills. Inside, the player can:
Fight Israel Hands as the Foothills boss encounter.
Loot the ancient chest at the back of the arena, which contains Soul Eater, Charon's Obol, approximately 200 Undead Essence, and a 50 XP bonus.
Clearing the encounter does more than hand over loot. Defeating Israel Hands frees John, the cartographer held inside the temple, and closes out the Needle in a Haystack chain, which is why this key sits at the center of the Foothills mid-game.
The key carries a "Legendary" rarity tag in the confirmed item database. This is consistent with other quest-unlock items in the game and does not indicate that the key has any special combat property or drop table. The Legendary tag reflects the key's role as a unique unlock rather than a power tier.
The ancient chest behind the Sealed Temple arena holds:
