Found in abandoned farms in the Foothills.
See the description above for the primary source of Fertile Soil.
Weight 0.5 per unit; factor it into inventory capacity when gathering.
Fertile Soil appears as dark brown, broken earth around the Ancient Ruins scattered throughout the Foothills. The soil pockets sit directly adjacent to ruined walls and old garden plots, and respawn after being cleared.
Harvesting requires a Stone Pickaxe or any sturdier pickaxe. Each patch yields several units; stock up when you are already running past ruins rather than making dedicated trips.
Fertile Soil is the farming substrate. Placing soil in planters or designated farm tiles at your base lets you cultivate flax, corn, and other seedlings without hunting them in the wild. Setting up base farms significantly reduces the time cost of stockpiling Flax Fiber for Linen Fabric and cornmeal for cooking.
Scout every ruin you pass, not just combat objectives. Some ruins have three or more soil patches.
Soil is heavy (0.5 per unit). Don't overload your inventory; leave it in a base chest next to your planters.
Farm expansion pairs well with the Millstones unlock, since homegrown corn feeds cornmeal and gunpowder production.
Once a Seedbed is placed (5 Fertile Soil per bed, Farming tab of the Building Panel), the following sapling and seedling stacks become plantable. Saplings drop randomly from foraging the parent plant in the wild; seedlings are pulled from Ancient Farms in the Foothills.
Crop | Seed Source | Discovered In |
|---|---|---|
Pepper Sapling | Random drop from foraging Cayenne Pepper | Coastal Jungle |
Sweet Potato Sapling | Random drop from foraging Sweet Potato | Coastal Jungle |
Aloe Sapling | Random drop from foraging Aloe Leaf | Foothills |
Tomato Sapling | Random drop from foraging Tomato | Foothills |
Corn Seedling | Picked at Ancient Farm POIs in the Foothills | Foothills |
Flax Seeding | Random drop from foraging Flax | Foothills |
Banana Sapling | Random drop from foraging Bananas | Coastal Jungle and Foothills |
Harvesting a mature seedbed crop yields more saplings or seedlings of the same type alongside the produce, so a single starting drop scales into a self-sustaining plot inside two or three harvests.
