The Coastal Dodo is a small, flightless bird found along the coastlines of the Caribbean in Windrose. Like the real-world dodo of Mauritius, the Coastal Dodo is approachable, slow, and unable to flee on the wing, which makes it one of the easiest food and trophy targets a new player can hunt. Each kill reliably yields Bird Meat, Feather, and Dodo Egg, with a rare chance at a Dodo Head trophy. It is the milder cousin of the Azure Dodo, which shares the same coast and is the more common source of the Dodo Head trophy.
Coastal Dodos are tagged to the Coastal Jungle biome and the open beaches that ring it. They are most commonly found:
On the sand and tidal flats next to the water line, often in small flocks of three to five birds.
Near the edges of palm groves, picking through fallen fruit and grass.
On the lower slopes of the islands that border the Coastal Jungle biome they avoid the deeper jungle interior and the highland areas of the larger islands.
Spawn density varies by island. The starter coast around Tortuga has reliable dodo flocks within a few minutes of leaving town, which is why Coastal Dodos are an early-tier hunting target while you are still learning combat and resource loops.
Coastal Dodos do not fight back and run only short distances before stopping again. Any starter weapon kills one in a single solid hit, and even an unarmed strike will eventually drop one. Recommended approaches:
Bow: the cleanest method. A single body shot from any tier of bow drops a dodo and avoids drawing aggression from larger predators that share the coastline.
Melee: walk up and swing. The dodo's panic radius is short enough that you almost always close the distance before it can move out of range.
Pistol or musket: overkill, but the noise can be useful when you intentionally want to draw nearby enemies. Otherwise, save the powder.
Watch for nearby threats while looting. Crocodiles patrol the same shorelines, and a wolf pack or wild boar can wander down from the jungle interior. The dodo carcass takes only a moment to harvest, but standing still on an open beach is when most coastal players take their first death from a roaming predator.
Each Coastal Dodo carcass yields, on average:
Bird Meat: the staple drop. Cook it over a Campfire or process it at a cookware station for early stat foods.
Feather: used in fletching and a handful of Crafting recipes.
Dodo Egg: one to two per carcass, a common cooking ingredient for early broths and stat dishes.
Dodo Head: a rare trophy drop, not a guaranteed payout. It is used to craft the Trophy Dodo decoration and can be sold to a faction Buyer for a small sum. Because the drop is uncommon, treat any Dodo Head as a bonus rather than a reliable income source.
Dodo Heads stack in inventory and travel well, so bank the occasional trophy for a single trip to Tortuga rather than sailing back after every lucky drop.
Dodos are the lowest-pressure way to keep fresh Bird Meat in your inventory while you grind early reputation quests around the Coastal Jungle.
If you specifically want the Dodo Head trophy for the Trophy Dodo decoration, expect to clear many birds per head; the drop is rare on Coastal Dodos and somewhat more common on the Azure Dodo.
Stack hunts with crocodile and wolf farming runs along the same coastline; the routes overlap, so you gather hides and trophies on the same loop.
Eggs and meat from a single coastal sweep feed several early recipes, so a dodo run pays for itself even when no trophy drops.
Coastal Dodos are the entry point of the dodo family in Windrose. Related entries share the same coast and loot loop:
