Windrose features multiple armor sets across five gear slots (Head, Torso, Hands, Legs, Feet) and a rarity tier system from Common through Mythic. Armor sets provide passive defense values plus 2-piece and 4-piece set bonuses that meaningfully shape combat builds. Players can mix sets to chain two 2-piece bonuses or commit to a single set's full 4-piece effect.
All Rare and higher armor sets occupy five slots: Head, Torso (Cuirass / Doublet / Jacket), Hands (Gloves), Legs (Pants), and Feet (Boots). Headgear varies by set: Conquistador's and Pikeman's use a Helmet, Flibustier's uses a Hat, Marksman's and Privateer's use a Tricorne, and Tracker's uses a Hat.
Seven Rare armor sets are documented in community databases and the in-game Armor and Clothing Workshop. Each has a distinct playstyle focus tied to its set bonuses.
Heavy plate set acquired through the Smugglers of Port Royal faction trader (Cuirass and Pants plans). The 2-piece +15% damage resistance is one of the strongest defensive bonuses in the launch build. The 4-piece Bulwark effect makes the first few hits in any encounter uninterruptible, letting you commit to a heavy attack windup without being staggered. Excellent for heavy-weapon builds (Pikeman or Crusher talent branches) or for tanking boss aggro in co-op.
Pirate-flavored light armor obtained through the Rogue Buccaneers faction trader (Jacket and Pants plans). The 2-piece -20% attack stamina cost lets you maintain longer combo strings before going Winded; the 4-piece +15% one-handed damage stacks with Fencer talents (Deep Cuts, Surgical Cuts) for a saber/rapier build. Pairs naturally with the Razor saber and Rapier of a Thousand Cuts.
Mobility-focused armor for firearm builds, sold by the People of Tortuga faction trader (Doublet and Pants plans). The 2-piece -30% sprint/jump/dash stamina extends mobility windows; the 4-piece +15% ranged damage scales with Marksman talents (Deep Impact, Bull's Eye). Pairs with the Reliable Musket, Reliable Pistol, and any blunderbuss build.
Heavy plate set obtained through the Smugglers of Port Royal faction trader (Cuirass and Pants plans). The 2-piece +160 max HP boosts effective HP pool; the 4-piece +15% two-handed damage is the highest two-handed scaler in Early Access. Pairs with greatswords (Captain's Greatsword, Soul Eater), halberds (Sturdy Halberd, Plague Halberd), and Crusher talent branches. Some community sources report +200 HP rather than +160; the in-game tooltip is the authoritative source.
Crit-focused light armor sold by the People of Tortuga faction trader (Coat and Pants plans). The 2-piece +10% Critical Hit Chance is a flat boost across all weapon types; the 4-piece +10% Critical Damage per nearby enemy (max 30%) rewards fighting in groups. Pairs with the Mastery attribute investment and Fencer's Surgical Cuts talent for a high-crit saber/rapier build.
Light armor obtained through the Rogue Buccaneers faction trader (Jacket and Pants plans). The 2-piece +35% healing effectiveness (some sources report +45%) amplifies bandages, healing potions, and rally healing; the 4-piece +15% damage resistance is universal damage reduction. Excellent for solo players who rely on attrition rather than burst damage, or for the dedicated healer role in 4-player co-op.
A heavy tank set referenced in community armor guides. Specific 2-piece and 4-piece bonus values continue to be documented by the community during Early Access. Pairs with Toughguy talents (Stout Frame, Just a Flesh Wound, Too Angry to Die) and a heavy two-handed weapon. See the dedicated
Juggernaut article for current details and the in-game equipment UI for authoritative bonus values.
Players can mix two pieces from each of two different sets to chain two 2-piece bonuses. Common mix-and-match builds:
All equipped armor pieces are averaged for defense calculations. Upgrading only one piece while leaving others at level 1 results in much lower effective defense than the upgraded piece's displayed value alone. Upgrade all armor pieces evenly for the best results. Gear can be upgraded up to level 8 at the Upgrading Station, and Rare items upgraded to level 8 can ascend to Epic rarity using Tumbaga Ingots from Blackbeard Treasure Maps.
Most named sets are unlocked through faction trader plans rather than world drops. Building reputation with each faction unlocks higher-tier inventory. Plans are then crafted at the Armor and Clothing Workshop using gathered materials (cloth, leather, hides, ingots).
In addition to the five armor slots, characters have additional equipment slots that affect stats:
Necklace: Often boosts stamina regeneration; crafted at the Jewellery Table
Rings (multiple): Provide stat-specific buffs; crafted from Silver and Gold Ingots at the Jewellery Table
Waist (Lantern slot): Lanterns replace the handheld torch and free up your weapon slot
Bag: Increases carrying capacity; crafted at the Workbench
Talent System - the Fencer/Crusher/Marksman/Toughguy branches that pair with each set
Upgrade System - leveling armor to 8 and ascending Rare to Epic
Weapons - matching weapon types to armor set damage bonuses
The Survivor's Set is the first full uncommon armor step after the torn shipwreck outfit. Current equipment listings on Windrose.tools show five pieces in the set: Survivor's Bandana, Survivor's Jacket, Survivor's Gloves, Survivor's Pants, and Survivor's Boots.
The opening Islander tutorial explicitly walks players into the boots craft, which makes the set the natural bridge between raw survival and the later faction armor families.
