Ancient Steel Shard is a fragmentary piece of weathered metal, pitted and rust-stained, of unknown origin and composition. The pieces are recovered from ruined swamp settlements and other pre-civilization sites scattered across the archipelago. Three shards carried out of the Cursed Swamps are enough to fuel one advanced smelting cycle at the right bench.
Ancient Steel Shard feeds exactly one confirmed recipe in the current build. The recipe runs at the Large Smelting Furnace, which must be placed outdoors and within range of a Bonfire.

Toledo Steel is a late-game metallurgy output, so banking a handful of Ancient Steel Shards before unlocking the Large Smelting Furnace is reasonable, but do not stockpile beyond a single-digit count until the bench is actually built. No other recipe in the launch build consumes Ancient Steel Shard.
Ancient Steel Shard is a swamp-ruin loot item. The shards drop primarily from ruined pre-civilization structures inside the Cursed Swamps biome, and a smaller number appear in Ancient Chests as part of multi-biome treasure runs. Expect to gather shards in the same sweep that also rewards Ancient Scraps and Ancient Relic Fragment, because the three share the same recovery terrain. Carry a Pickaxe for the pillar and debris interactions common to swamp ruin loops.
Hold shards in a dedicated bin near the Large Smelting Furnace once the bench exists. A single Toledo Steel pass uses 5 shards, so store in multiples of five to avoid fractional stacks.
Pair the swamp run with a Salt detour. Toledo Steel crafts also consume 3 Salt per pass, and Salt is a Tortuga Buyer-adjacent resource that stacks cheaply in your inventory.
Charcoal is the rate-limiter for most long Toledo Steel sessions. A standard kiln backlog of 20 Charcoal per shard set is the practical floor for planning a five-pass production night.
