In Search of the Right Sound is Nakatani's request to finish a piece of sheet music. It begins in Huther during the Age of Safekeeping, then visits musicians in each earlier age. The final contribution requires access to Hitoyori, so the quest can remain unfinished for a while after it first becomes available.

Talk to Nakatani on the tavern stage to receive the request. He wants help completing his music while Elliot travels. Keep returning to him after each contribution rather than moving directly from one musician to the next.

Reaching the Dispirited Man's step before the Age of Budding opens is a story gate. Continue the main journey until Hitoyori is accessible, then return to the music quest. The earlier musicians are not substitutes for his contribution.
The final conversation offers a choice of responses about the completed piece. There is no single required answer for receiving the completion reward, so choose the response preferred for the scene.
