Complete story recap of Subnautica (2018)
The original Subnautica (released January 23, 2018) follows Ryley Robinson, the Non-Essential Systems Maintenance Chief aboard the Alterra Corporation ship Aurora. This article covers the full plot for players who want background before playing Subnautica 2.
The Aurora is a deep-space vessel sent to the far end of colonized space on a mission to construct a phasegate. Its secondary objective is to search for the wreck of the Degasi, a ship that disappeared in the same sector ten years earlier. As the Aurora passes near an uncharted ocean planet designated 4546B, an energy beam from the planet's surface strikes the ship, causing it to crash. Ryley is the sole survivor, escaping in Lifepod 5.
The planet is almost entirely covered by ocean. Ryley discovers the remains of the Degasi crew through abandoned bases and logs. The Degasi survivors had been stranded on 4546B for years before being killed by predatory fauna, with the exception of Marguerit Maida, who survived alone in the deep.
Ryley becomes infected with the Kharaa bacterium, an alien pathogen that had devastated the planet's ecosystem. The Kharaa was originally brought to 4546B by the Architects (also called Precursors), an advanced alien race that had built research facilities across the planet. A containment breach at one of their facilities released the bacterium into the ocean, infecting the local wildlife.
The Architects built a massive weapon called the Quarantine Enforcement Platform (QEP) on the planet's surface to prevent any infected organisms from leaving. The QEP is what shot down the Aurora. When a rescue ship called the Sunbeam attempts to land and retrieve survivors, the QEP destroys it too. Ryley realizes that no ship can leave or approach the planet while the QEP is active.
Deep underground, Ryley discovers the Sea Emperor Leviathan, the last surviving member of its species. The Architects had captured it and held it in a massive containment facility called the Primary Containment Facility. The Sea Emperor communicates with Ryley telepathically, its thoughts appearing as vague visions throughout the game.
The Architects had discovered that the Sea Emperor produced an enzyme (Enzyme 42) that could cure the Kharaa bacterium. However, they were unable to synthesize a stable version from the captive adult. The Sea Emperor's unfertilized eggs held the key, but the Architects couldn't get them to hatch.
Ryley manages to hatch the Sea Emperor's eggs by recreating the environmental conditions they need. The baby Sea Emperors release a stable form of Enzyme 42 into the ocean, curing Ryley's infection and beginning to heal the planet's ecosystem. With the infection cured, Ryley disables the Quarantine Enforcement Platform.
Ryley builds a rocket (the Neptune Escape Rocket) using blueprints and materials gathered throughout the game. He launches from the planet's surface and eventually reaches Alterra space. In a bittersweet ending, Ryley receives a message informing him that he owes Alterra approximately 1 trillion credits for the resources he used to survive.
Subnautica sold over 5.3 million copies and generated over $108 million in Steam revenue. It spent about three years in Early Access (December 2014 to January 2018) and was widely praised for its blend of exploration, survival mechanics, and environmental storytelling. The game was built in Unity.
