Planet Zezura

Added 14-year journey, surface environments, bacterium, ship AI details
Planet Zezura is the alien world where Subnautica 2 takes place. It is entirely separate from Planet 4546B, the setting of both Subnautica and Below Zero. The Steam store description calls it "a new world" with "an all-new story."
The player character is a pioneer who has been asleep for 14 years during the interstellar journey to Zezura. This long transit time places the game well after the events of the previous two games. The pioneer arrives as part of a mission, but something goes wrong. The ship crashes into Zezura's ocean, and the ship's AI insists the pioneer carry on the mission despite the hostile conditions.
The official tagline warns: "This world is too dangerous for humans to survive... Unless you change what it means to be human." This directly references the genetic modification system powered by the Biosampler.
Zezura features both underwater and surface environments. The surface has "harsh, desert-like conditions," a departure from Planet 4546B, which was almost entirely oceanic with only a few small islands. The underwater environment contains at least nine confirmed biomes ranging from familiar ecosystems (Kelp Forest) to mysterious zones (Overgrown Ruins, World Tree).
A dynamic weather system affects ocean currents, visibility, and creature behavior, as shown in Dev Vlog #1. This makes the environment more unpredictable than in previous games, where conditions were largely static.
A bacterium is spreading on Zezura. Whether this is connected to the Kharaa bacterium from previous games or represents an entirely new pathogen hasn't been confirmed. The Voices from Beyond audio drama also mentions a "mysterious outbreak," though the connection between these two story threads is unclear.
The Overgrown Ruins biome raises the question of whether the Architects had a presence on Zezura. In the previous games, the Architects built research facilities across multiple planets while searching for a cure to Kharaa. If they visited Zezura, their ruins might contain data, technology, or clues about the planet's history.
Zezura has a unique ecosystem. Confirmed creatures include the Collector Leviathan (a squid-like predator in the Sparse Plains). The planet's biology is central to the Biosampler mechanic, implying the local fauna has genetic properties that can be adapted for human survival.
