Planet Zezura details from official sources
Planet Zezura is the alien ocean world where Subnautica 2 takes place. It is an entirely new planet, separate from Planet 4546B where both Subnautica and Below Zero were set.
Zezura is described as a dangerous alien world that requires adaptation to survive. The Steam store listing describes players as "pioneers on a dangerous planet." The planet's ocean contains diverse biomes ranging from kelp forests and coral gardens to overgrown ruins and a massive structure called the World Tree.
The game opens with players arriving on Zezura as part of a mission. Their ship's AI guides them to continue the mission objectives while dealing with the hostile environment. How the player ended up stranded on the planet and the nature of their mission form part of the game's narrative.
Subnautica 2 is set sometime after the events of both previous games. The presence of the Overgrown Ruins biome raises questions about whether the Architects (the Precursor alien race from previous games) had a presence on Zezura. The ruins could also be remnants of human exploration or an entirely new civilization.
Zezura has its own unique ecosystem of alien creatures. Confirmed fauna includes the Collector Leviathan (a squid-like predator in the Sparse Plains), along with creatures called the Wakemaker and Hammerhead, which have appeared in preview screenshots but lack detailed public information.
The planet's biology is central to the Biosampler mechanic. Players study Zezura's creatures to extract DNA and modify their own genetics, implying the planet's life has genetic properties compatible with or useful to human biology.
