Multiplayer and Co-Op

Multiplayer details from dev vlogs and official sources
Subnautica 2 supports 1-4 player online co-op, making it the first mainline Subnautica game with multiplayer support. The system was detailed in Dev Vlog #5 ("Diving Together in Multiplayer"), released February 10, 2026.
Unknown Worlds has been clear that Subnautica 2 remains a single-player experience at its core. Co-op is entirely optional. No puzzles require two players, no areas are locked behind multiplayer, and the full game can be completed solo from start to finish. The developers designed co-op as an addition for players who want it rather than a fundamental restructuring of the Subnautica formula.
This was a deliberate response to community concerns that adding multiplayer would water down the isolation and tension that defined the original game.
Players can start a game in multiplayer from the beginning or convert an existing solo save into a co-op session at any time. Friends can be invited through their platform's friends list (Steam, Xbox) or through Subnautica 2's own cross-platform friends list.
Cross-play between PC and Xbox is confirmed. The game is also compatible with handheld PC devices like the ROG Ally and Steam Deck.
Players in co-op can choose between first-person and third-person camera views independently. This means one player can be in first-person while another uses third-person.
When playing together, players share bases. Power management becomes a collective responsibility since life support systems need to stay active for all four divers. This creates a natural incentive for players to coordinate on resource gathering and base expansion.
Leaked milestone documents revealed that the multiplayer architecture shifted from dedicated servers (the original plan) to peer-to-peer networking. This change was part of the scaled-back Early Access scope.
Adding co-op to Subnautica has been one of the most debated decisions in the franchise's history. Fans of the original feared that multiplayer would undermine the isolation that made exploring deep caves and encountering leviathans so tense. Others had been requesting co-op since the first game launched in 2018. Unknown Worlds' approach of making co-op entirely optional appears designed to satisfy both camps.
