Leviathan-Class Organisms
May 20, 2026 at 05:41 AM
Updated the leviathan roster now that the build is live: confirmed the Great Jaw with its real location and trap behavior, added the docile Deepwing Brooder as a confirmed launch leviathan, and removed the outdated note that the Deepwing Brooder was not in the launch build
Any organism in Subnautica 2 exceeding a certain size threshold is classified as leviathan-class by the PDA. Leviathans range from passive filter-feeders to the largest hostile predators in the moon's ocean. In keeping with the game's no-weapons philosophy, none of them can be killed; the player evades, lures, or outruns them rather than fighting.
Multiple leviathan-class organisms appear in the Early Access launch build. The clearly named launch entries are the Collector Leviathan, the Shiver Leviathan, the stationary Great Jaw, and the docile Deepwing Brooder. They are listed together below.
Leviathan | Habitat | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
A squid-like predator with four main tentacles and mandible feeding tentacles. Uses roar/shockwave attacks and a stimulus-driven AI that reacts to player actions in real time. Spawns approximately 20,000 to 25,000 units from the player upon entering Sparse Plains. | ||
A pack-hunting void-dweller. Females are larger and carry smaller, more agile males that detach for coordinated attacks. Encountered when the player passes the map-edge boundary into the Void. | ||
Listed as a leviathan-class entry on launch-week reference lists. Name is tentative and has not yet been cross-confirmed in the in-game PDA Data Bank; expect the in-build label to land in a later update. | ||
Near the start, about 350m south of the Lifepod by the CICADA wreck | A stationary giant clam. Its open shell is ringed with pink tripwire tendrils that snap it shut on anything that touches them, dissolving trapped prey. It also emits a survivable initial shock. A source of Lithium. | |
Open water (rare) | The game's only docile leviathan. A heavily armored filter feeder that drifts in open water and rarely appears. It drops clumps of blue oil droplets as decoys mixed with its much larger, nutritious eggs. |
The Void biome at the map boundary is the Shiver Leviathan's habitat. Pre-launch coverage occasionally treated "Void Leviathan" as a separate species; in the launch build, the Shiver Leviathan

is the Void's leviathan. There is no separate Void Leviathan creature in the live build.
Leviathans in Subnautica 2 cannot be killed. Design Lead Anthony Gallegos described lethal solutions as "boring" and confirmed the game has "no weapons, only collection tools." The Scanner and other equipment are classified as collection items rather than weapons; the knife from previous franchise entries is not present. Player tactics rely on flares, stealth, vehicle positioning, and biome avoidance rather than direct combat.

Several leviathan candidates discussed during the pre-launch run-up do not appear in the launch build under those names:

Wakemaker Leviathan: the Wakemaker is the player's handheld propulsion device, not a creature. No primary source confirms a leviathan by this name.
A second cut leviathan was removed from the Early Access scope during pre-launch development. Its identity has not been disclosed. See Cut Content.
Additional leviathans are planned for the future major expansion described in the Early Access and Development Roadmap. Coverage of new leviathans will be added to this page as Unknown Worlds confirms each one in the live build.
