The Hoverthorn is a passive, edible fish of the ruins areas in Subnautica 2, commonly seen in groups around the Overgrown Ruins. It is skittish and flees from an approaching diver, so scanning one is easier with a speed boost from a biomod or equipment. The scan is worth chasing: it unlocks the Threat Sense biomod, which warns a diver when a hostile creature is nearby with a beep and a growing indicator at the top of the screen.

Appearance
The long, slender body is split into a blue upper half and an orange lower half, with a sharp slender mouth and two round eyes. About a third of its length is a pointed crystal extending from the tail, below a single small blue and purple fin.
Databank Notes
The entry, generated under the name Monopter astrapakantha (the one-finned lightning thorn), explains that the tail crystal is a mineralized swim bladder that organizes electric charge. By moving charge along the crystal, the Hoverthorn polarizes the surrounding seawater and generates its own currents to ride, effectively swimming without fins. A duplicated secondary eye filled with electro-active jelly lets it see electromagnetic fields, and pairs of Hoverthorns joust tail-first with their crystals in a mating display.
