The Angel Comb is a large, sessile Bloom organism encountered across multiple biomes in Subnautica 2. Each Angel Comb hosts a cluster of bulbs in distinct colours, and interacting with a specific bulb is the in-build method by which the player acquires an Adaptation. The organism is biologically connected to the Titan Rockbore that it parasitises, and is described in the launch-build PDA entries as part of the planetary "Bloom" lifeform class rather than as a piece of technology.
Angel Combs are anchored, plant-like organisms that grow from the substrate or from a host body, depending on biome. They are large enough to be visible at long distance and emit ambient light from their bulbs, making them useful as navigation landmarks. The launch-build entries describe them as sessile (rooted in place) and the wiki-confirmed reference text places them in the same "Bloom" class as other towering symbiotic flora.
Each Angel Comb is parasitically linked to a Titan Rockbore: the host creature's metabolism is the nutrient source the organism draws on to sustain its growth and to develop the genetic material the player extracts. The relationship is one-way; the Titan Rockbore is not destroyed by the Angel Comb attached to it, but is durably attached for the host's lifetime. This connection is what allows the bulbs to carry the genetic templates the player can apply to themselves via the Biosampler.
Each Angel Comb hosts bulbs that correspond to one of the four Adaptations available in the Early Access launch build. The specific bulb-to-Adaptation mapping is consistent across launch-coverage walkthroughs and matches the in-game Adaptations PDA tab once unlocked.
Bulb | Adaptation Granted | Acquisition Context |
|---|---|---|
Colony hab interior bulb | Acquired inside the CICADA colony hab prologue before the Lifepod escape. | |
Early-ocean bulb (Anita's site) | Roughly 160 to 180 metres north-northeast of the Lifepod, near Anita Gottschal's blackbox. | |
Pink bulb at Sampling Pavilion | Acquired at the Axum-coded structure referred to in launch-coverage walkthroughs as the 'Sampling Pavilion' (a community-coined name; the in-game PDA name has not yet been confirmed); unlocks readability of Axum glyphs. | |
Hot-vent bulb (sulfur biome) | Acquired in the geothermal-vent biome around the Sulfur Pyres feature cluster. |
Each Adaptation is permanent once acquired. Bulb interaction is irreversible: once a player commits to taking the Adaptation from a given bulb, the bulb is consumed and that Angel Comb cannot grant the same Adaptation again. The four Early Access Adaptations are listed individually under Adaptations.
Because the Angel Combs are visually distinctive and bioluminescent, they function as the primary in-world navigation cue for the player's Adaptation progression. Each unlocked bulb anchors a region of the map and tends to be surrounded by terrain and creatures that pair with the Adaptation it grants: the Heat Tolerance bulb sits near hot geothermal vents, the Axum Vision bulb sits near Axum-coded architecture, and so on. The Angel Combs themselves do not move, and the path between them in the live build forms the spine of the early-game exploration loop.
Four Angel Comb bulbs are accessible at Early Access launch, matching the four Adaptations available in the live build. Additional Adaptations are planned for later updates per the Early Access and Development Roadmap; if those Adaptations follow the same bulb-interaction model, more Angel Comb sites are expected to be added or unlocked over time. None of those additional sites are present in the launch build.
