11Combat in Streets of Rogue 2 is one route to a goal rather than the only one. The game is built so a player can fight, sneak, hack, bribe, or negotiate past almost any obstacle, and the combat systems are designed around that freedom instead of assuming a firefight. What follows is drawn from the developer's public roadmap and dev blogs. The game is still in development, so specifics can change before the Early Access build ships.2233Weapon Categories4455Weapons sit in three primary categories: melee, projectile, and thrown. The sequel adds a second layer the first game did not have. Where the original had a single Knife and a single Pistol, those names are now subcategories that hold several distinct weapons each, and a weapon's place within a subcategory is tied into the World Tier System, so the pistol a player finds early is not the pistol they find deep into a run.6677CategoryStatusNotesMeleeIn game, being reworkedThe developer has said he has not yet started differentiating melee from the first game, and that a character built to be weak at melee currently finds it too easy to win a one-on-one exchange. Variation is planned around character stats, abilities, and weapon modifications.ProjectileIn game, being extendedReloading is being introduced as a mechanic, alongside new weapon modifications.ThrownIn gameCovers the throwables and gadgets that carry the first game's improvised-weapon streak forward, and is one of the three primary categories the subcategory layer sits on top of.88Ammunition991010Every gun inside the same subcategory shares one ammunition type. The developer has said he is not planning separate ammo types for guns in the same subcategory, and that varied fire behavior will come from modifications applied to the weapon itself rather than from what is loaded into it. Ammunition also sits in the unlimited-slot half of the inventory, so stocking up never competes with carrying tools or quest items.111112+1213Damage Types13141415Damage is sorted into types, and a type's effectiveness depends on the material it lands on. The developer's own examples: swinging a baseball bat at a tree accomplishes very little, while an axe cuts it down quickly. The same logic removes a first-game convenience, in that a wooden door can no longer be broken with bare fists. The developer has left the exception open rather than fixed, saying that it may still be possible if strength is extremely high or the character has taken traits that improve skill with fists.15161617Knockouts17181819Non-lethal weapons make knockouts a far more common outcome than they were in the first game. A knocked-out NPC is not permanently removed: after enough time passes they stand back up and resume their daily schedule. A knocked-out player is currently handled the same way as a death, though the developer has flagged that this may change.192020212122Knockouts also feed the non-lethal routes elsewhere in the game. Animal removal quests can be resolved humanely by knocking the animal out and delivering it to a Ranger outpost instead of killing it, and the planned crime system is meant to let police arrest rather than only turn hostile.22232324Vehicle Combat24252526Car-to-car combat is a supported form of fighting rather than an accident of the driving model. The developer has said his own testing found it genuinely fun and that he wants to build in plenty of opportunities for it to happen. It sits on top of the wider vehicle systems, where cars are hijackable, destructible, and driven by NPCs who obey traffic laws until something goes wrong.26272728Special Abilities in Combat28292930The first game gave each character one special ability used for the whole run. The sequel dedicates multiple buttons to special abilities, and abilities can be swapped in and out for others the character acquires. The developer has raised the possibility that one of the ability slots could be tied to whichever weapon is currently held. A radial weapon wheel replaces the first game's weapon cycling and was listed as completed in the June 2026 status update; the developer has said it may also handle special ability selection, and that it frees a gamepad button for the second ability mapping.303131323233A stamina bar is under consideration. It would drain when performing certain special abilities and tasks, replacing cooldowns in some cases, and would tie into the food and eating system.33343435Combat AI35363637Enemy combat behavior is inherited from the first game and is being adjusted to account for the new weapon functionality rather than rebuilt. Broader NPC behavior, scheduling, and relationships are covered under Gameplay Systems.373839+3840Related Systems39414042Character Classes: class and profession choices shape which combat approaches are viable.Traits and Custom Characters: traits that modify melee skill, strength, and stealth. The World Tier System: weapon subcategories and NPC strength scale with world tier.Animals and Wildlife: some animals fight alongside the player, and at least one unplanned interaction lets them use weapons.
