11Base building gives Streets of Rogue 2 a home to return to and a reason to hold territory. A player claims land, constructs a building on it, farms it, and staffs it with NPCs who live and work there. The systems below are described in the developer's public roadmap; several are functional in internal builds and several are still planned, so each entry notes where it stands.2233Claiming Land4455Land is claimed with money or with vouchers, and whether a plot can be claimed at all depends on the viability of the location. Claim items such as the Land Voucher live in the Build Mode section of the inventory. The developer describes land acquisition as functioning well with room for expansion.6677Construction8899Players can build walls, floors, and objects. Build Mode is opened by holding the inventory button on a gamepad and includes a mousewheel-driven rotation control, with object variants that follow the chunk type the player is standing in. Player-built homes carry pathing rules of their own, and in some cases a floor must be present for NPCs to avoid treating an area as impassable.101011+1112FeatureStateDetailWalls, floors, objectsIn gameThe core construction set.Diagonal wallsNot possibleListed by the developer as a current limitation.Multiple floor layersNot finishedNeeded for rugs and layered flooring.Editing game-built buildingsNot possibleCurrently blocked even for buildings the player owns, though the developer expects this to change.ReconstructionPlannedA fast way to repair damaged sections of a building after an attack, provided the player holds the materials.Prefab placementPlannedPlacing whole prebuilt layouts for cash or materials.Saved layoutsPlannedSaving a base layout and reapplying it elsewhere, or in a different world. The developer has floated this as a possible Workshop item.1213Farming13141415Farming is functional: crops can be planted, watered, grown, and harvested. The developer has said the system currently lacks depth and polish and that he wants to add mechanics that fit it more comfortably into the wider game. Seeds and fertilizer sit with the other Build Mode items, and harvested produce feeds the crafting and cooking system alongside meat from animals.15161617Followers17181819Followers are NPCs who live and work at the player's base. The technical side of acquiring them is described as in good shape; what has not been established is the means by which a player recruits one, whether through money, relationship standing, or something else. A dedicated Followers screen is planned for the tab menu and has not been started.192020212122AspectStateDetailBehaviorIn developmentInside the base, followers treat it as its own ecosystem and behave like NPCs elsewhere in the world: sleeping in beds, working at job-designated objects, and taking part in leisure activities.Job effectsIn developmentWhat a follower provides depends on the job they do. The developer's examples: a Hacker at a computer might generate extra Influence, while a Worker at a work desk might generate extra money.Upkeep costPlannedCost is expected to depend on alliances, the type of NPC, their specific job, and the aesthetic and leisure objects present at the base. The developer has noted the cost might not be money.VisitorsPlannedNPCs visiting the player's building during leisure time, which would let the player run a shop or restaurant. The developer has said plenty of details remain to be worked out.AnimalsIn gameAnimals can be kept at the base and provide benefits, handled by the same system that covers NPC employment.2223Location and Surroundings23242425Where a base is placed is intended to matter. The developer's example is that a base meant to operate as a shop would not attract many visitors if it were dropped in the middle of the woods. Objects placed inside a home may eventually carry extra effects for the player or the NPCs living there, an idea the developer has described as unlikely to be counted on but consistent with his preference for giving objects more uses.25262627Bases in Multiplayer27282829The developer has raised the risk that other players in online games could wreck a base, and has said he will at minimum provide a setting to disallow it. He also wants multiple players to be able to modify the same building at the same time when the owner permits it. See Co-Op and Multiplayer for the wider multiplayer picture.293030313132Relation to City Management32333334Base building is separate from the city management layer that unlocks after a player gains mayoral power over a city. That layer covers laws and proclamations and, eventually, placing buildings with city funds from a zoomed-out view. It is covered under Mayors and the President.35+
