Accuracy fix: Fix engine claim
Seed Sparkle Lab is a Chinese indie game development studio based in Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province. Starsand Island is their debut title and the studio's sole released project. The team is led by Creative Director Richardo Wang and Technical Director Golton Gao. Seed Sparkle Lab describes their mission as creating a "next-generation cozy life-simulation sandbox" where players can slow down, build their ideal pastoral life, and find warmth and emotional comfort on a living island.
The studio has operated under several names over the course of its development. It was originally known as Creativision Studio, then rebranded to Seed Lab during the majority of Starsand Island's development and marketing period (including the Kickstarter campaign and game show appearances). The studio adopted its current name, Seed Sparkle Lab, around the time of the Early Access launch in February 2026.
The team is based in Zhuhai, a coastal city known as the "city of a thousand islands." In interviews, the developers have described how the view of scattered islands from their office windows directly inspired the game's island setting and name. The team originally planned to develop an action game, but finalized the farming simulation concept by late 2023.

Golton Gao | Technical Director (also credited as Producer in some press materials) |
Gao has described the game's character customization system, built on their proprietary engine, as "a self-inflicted nightmare for coders," reflecting the technical complexity the team took on to deliver full creative freedom to players.
Seed Sparkle Lab draws deeply from Daoist philosophy, particularly the concept of "great usefulness born from a state of no intention" (wu wei). This principle shapes how the game's various systems connect naturally rather than through forced progression. The studio describes the game as a "spiritual utopia" aimed at delivering "a heartwarming and healing emotional experience."
The team draws from cultural philosophies centered on nature, tranquility, and the healing power of everyday life, aiming to create what they call an "Eastern-inspired world of pastoral reflection." In interviews, the developers have consistently expressed their core message: "We want to share the idea that it's okay to slow down. The game is about relaxation, creativity, and gentle connections."
The studio built Starsand Island on a Unity 6000 engine with a custom-built character customization and building system developed from scratch. According to reporting, the team felt only a custom engine could provide the level of player freedom and the sheer number of different aesthetic pieces they envisioned for the game's customization systems.

Seed Sparkle Lab partnered with Pathea Games, the studio behind the My Time series (My Time at Portia, My Time at Sandrock). This collaboration brought crossover characters to Starsand Island:
Gust and Ginger from My Time at Portia, available from the start of the game
Fang and Nia from My Time at Sandrock, arriving in Autumn of Year 1
The two studios also offer a combined "My Time at Starsand Island" bundle on Steam, and a My Time at Sandrock crossover event is planned for Autumn 2026.
Seed Sparkle Lab self-publishes Starsand Island on Steam and Xbox digital storefronts. The studio received investment from Kingsoft and its subsidiary Seasun Games, which facilitated the Chinese government game approval process. The studio has stated publicly that this investment does not affect their creative independence, describing themselves as "an independent studio and not a subsidiary of any conglomerate."
Physical distribution for the PS5 edition in the Asia-Pacific region is handled by Game Source Entertainment (GSE). The game launched day-one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
After the Early Access launch, Seed Sparkle Lab shipped five patches in eight days, addressing crashes, quest blockers, and controller issues. The studio also responded to community feedback by removing anti-cheat systems and updating a restrictive EULA. The team has committed to several player-friendly policies:
No in-game microtransactions
Full mod support planned (Steam Workshop targeted for May 2026)
Community-driven development through a "co-creation" philosophy
No planned price increase after Early Access
See Update History for full patch notes and Post-Launch Roadmap for planned content updates.
