Applied Title Case to body headings
Rekon (also romanized as Rekkon) are one of the four intelligent races in the world of Project Windless and The Bird That Drinks Tears. They are towering humanoid bird beings known for their immense physical strength, speed, and ferocity.
Approximately seven feet tall
Humanoid body with avian features
Immense physical strength, speed, and combat ability
Among the most formidable warriors of any race
Rekon are nomadic warriors, solitary by nature. They value honor and strength above all else. Their society is built around individual conviction rather than collective governance. Each Rekon is driven by a personal Calling, a lifelong aspiration unique to the individual that defines their existence.
This extreme individualism means Rekon rarely build lasting institutions. They follow no kings and form no nations. This makes the Hero King's founding of the Arajit Kingdom all the more extraordinary. It was the first and only kingdom ever established by a Rekon, and it required a warrior whose sense of obligation overrode the most fundamental trait of his race.
Every Rekon bears a Calling: a deeply personal aspiration or drive that shapes their entire life. The Calling is not assigned; it emerges from within. Rekon who fulfill their Calling are honored. Those who abandon it are considered lost. The Hero King's Calling was unusual: rather than a personal ambition, he felt called to protect and unite, which set him apart from his kind.
Rekon wield weapons crafted of stariron, a unique metal exclusive to their race. The traditional Rekon weapon is a seven-meter-long iron spear, though the Hero King is notable for wielding twin swords instead. Weapons are forged at the Final Forge (also called the Last Blacksmith), a legendary smithy.
Rekon have a cultural and possibly inherent paralyzing fear of water. This is both a lore element in the novels and is expected to feature as a gameplay mechanic in Project Windless. In The Bird That Drinks Tears, the Rekon member of the escort party is described as being deathly afraid of water.
Rekon exist in tension with the other three races: Nhaga, Tokkebi, and Humans. In the novel's escort party, the Rekon member must travel alongside members of all three other races despite deep cultural divides. In the game's era, these tensions have erupted into open war.
