Tokkebi (also romanized as Dokkebi or Dokkaebis) are one of the four intelligent races in the world of Project Windless and The Bird That Drinks Tears. They are mischievous beings drawn from Korean folklore (the dokkaebi spirits) with a natural affinity for fire magic.
Abilities
Natural affinity for fire manipulation, can create and control fire at will
Described as sorcerers and magic users among the four races
In the novel's escort party, the Tokkebi fills the role of "the Sorcerer"
Culture
Tokkebi are tricksters who "laugh in the face of death." They are known for their love of ssireum (Korean wrestling), their mischievous nature, and (unusually) an aversion to blood. Despite their playful reputation, Tokkebi possess formidable magical abilities that make them dangerous in conflict.
Beliefs about death
Tokkebi believe that death leads to eternal existence as an Oreusin a transcendent state. This belief shapes their fearlessness and their willingness to take risks that other races would consider suicidal. It also explains their mischievous attitude toward mortality: if death is a promotion, there is less reason to fear it.
Korean folklore origins
The Tokkebi are inspired by dokkaebi from Korean mythology. Supernatural beings known for playing tricks on humans, carrying magical clubs (bangmangi), and being associated with fire and transformation. Lee Yeong-do adapted these traditional figures into a fully realized fantasy race with their own society, beliefs, and role in the world's power structure.
In the novels
In The Bird That Drinks Tears, the Tokkebi member of the escort party is described as being merely a scholar, not a warrior. This subversion of expectations is characteristic of the novel's approach: the Tokkebi's power comes from magic and cunning rather than physical prowess.
In the game
In Project Windless, Tokkebi appear as fire-wielding antagonists and potential allies in the continent-spanning conflict. Their magical abilities and unpredictable nature make them a wildcard faction in the war between the four races.
