Pokemon Pokopia features a collectible system of Lost Relics, Fossils, and Mysterious Slates found inside glowing blocks scattered throughout the world. The appraisal and collection system involves two unique Pokemon with exclusive specialties: Professor Tangrowth (Appraise) and Gimmighoul (Collect). Breaking glowing blocks can yield any of these three item categories, making excavation a core exploration activity.
Glowing spots appear randomly in the ground across all biomes and on Dream Islands. They can be discovered naturally while exploring or located more efficiently using a Pokemon with the Search specialty and the Dowsing Machine ability. When you approach a glowing block, break it using Rock Smash. Occasionally, you will receive a prompt to use Water Gun instead. Failing to comply causes the block to explode, destroying its contents.
Glowing blocks refresh each day, so returning to previously explored areas yields new drops. Lucky days (occurring roughly every 7 in-game days) feature increased glowing block spawn rates across all areas.
The following 16 Pokemon have the Search specialty and can use the Dowsing Machine ability to locate hidden glowing blocks and relics:

Lost Relics are collectible items found inside glowing blocks. They drop as unidentified relics that must be appraised by Professor Tangrowth before they can be used or displayed. There are two categories: Small Relics (46 total) and Large Relics (37 total). Relics drop randomly from glowing blocks, so there is an element of luck in completing the collection. Duplicates are common.
Find a glowing block and break it with Rock Smash (or Water Gun if prompted) to collect an unidentified Lost Relic.
Bring the relic to Professor Tangrowth, who can be found wandering near the Pokemon Center in any area.
Talk to Tangrowth and show him the relic. He appraises it, revealing its identity.
The appraised relic appears in your Collection menu and can now be displayed, used as decoration, or traded to Gimmighoul.
Small Relics are frameable display items themed after classic Pokemon held items from the main series. They are non-functional collectibles that can be hung on walls as decorations. Confirmed Small Relics include:

Once relics are appraised by Professor Tangrowth, duplicate relics can be traded with Gimmighoul, the only Pokemon with the Collect specialty. Gimmighoul resides in the ruins of the Pewter City Museum deep inside the caves and volcano of Rocky Ridges. Gimmighoul is described as a treasure collector who "recognizes fellow collectors."
Players can exchange the following items with Gimmighoul:
Item | Source | Exchange Reward |
|---|---|---|
Appraised Large Lost Relics (duplicates) | Glowing blocks throughout the world | Unique furniture items |
Rainbow Feathers | Dropped by Ho-Oh (surrounded by flames; use Water Gun to collect) | Special exclusive furniture and decorations |
Silver Wings | Dropped by Lugia (surrounded by tornado; use Cut to collect) | Pop art furniture (tables, sofas, etc.) |
To fully unlock Gimmighoul's exchange service, the player must build a mini museum habitat requiring harbor poles, a large appraised Lost Relic, and a pedestal/exhibition stand. Completing this habitat finishes Gimmighoul's Pokedex entry and unlocks ongoing exchanges.
Fossils are a separate category of collectible found inside the same glowing blocks that contain Lost Relics. Unlike relics, fossils are used to restore prehistoric Pokemon by displaying them on Exhibition Stands in the Pewter City Museum in Rocky Ridges. There are 9 fossil Pokemon in Pokopia, with some requiring a single fossil piece and others needing multiple pieces assembled together.
Fossil | Pokemon Restored |
|---|---|
Skull Fossil | Cranidos |
Armor Fossil | Shieldon |
Jaw Fossil | Tyrunt |
Sail Fossil | Amaura |
Pokemon | Fossil Pieces Required | Total Pieces |
|---|---|---|
Aerodactyl | Wing Fossil Head, Wing Fossil Body, Wing Fossil Tail, Wing Fossil Left Wing, Wing Fossil Right Wing | 5 |
Rampardos | Headbutt Fossil Head, Headbutt Fossil Body, Headbutt Fossil Tail | 3 |
Bastiodon | Shield Fossil Head, Shield Fossil Body, Shield Fossil Tail | 3 |
Tyrantrum | Despot Fossil Head, Despot Fossil Body, Despot Fossil Tail, Despot Fossil Legs | 4 |
Aurorus | Tundra Fossil Head, Tundra Fossil Body, Tundra Fossil Tail | 3 |
To restore a fossil Pokemon:
Collect the required fossil piece(s) from glowing blocks. Fossils can be found on all five areas.
Travel to the Pewter City Museum in Rocky Ridges.
Place the fossil(s) on the corresponding Fossil Display (e.g., Wing Fossil Display, Skull Fossil Display) at an Exhibition Stand.
The fossil Pokemon is restored and added to your Pokedex.
Build the corresponding habitat for the restored fossil Pokemon to attract it to your world.
Duplicate fossils are common before completing all restorations. Excess fossils can be traded for a high price. Exhibition Stands are found at the Museum in Rocky Ridges and may also be obtained as rare Large Relics.
Mysterious Slates are a third category of collectible found in glowing blocks alongside Lost Relics and Fossils. There are 28 Mysterious Slates in total, each bearing an engraving of an Unown symbol on its back.
In the Withered Wasteland, behind the Pokemon Center, punch down a wall to reveal a hidden chamber containing a mural displaying the entire Unown alphabet. Each slate must be placed in the position matching its corresponding Unown symbol. As slates are placed, a picture gradually forms on the mural. The final reward for inserting all 28 slates is Mew, the mythical Pokemon that becomes Pokedex entry #224.
The game will not give you duplicate slates until all unique ones have been found, so every new slate brings you closer to completing the mural.
Use a Search specialty Pokemon (Pidgey, Growlithe, Drilbur, or Umbreon are good early choices) with the Dowsing Machine ability to locate hidden glowing blocks and relics more efficiently.
Visit all areas regularly. Glowing blocks refresh each day and appear across all five biomes.
Watch for lucky days (roughly every 7 in-game days). These increase glowing block spawn rates significantly.
When a block prompts you to use Water Gun instead of Rock Smash, switch moves immediately. Using the wrong move causes the block to explode and destroys its contents.
Bring Lost Relics to Professor Tangrowth regularly. He wanders near the Pokemon Center in every area. Unidentified relics cannot be used, displayed, or traded.
Establish a regular circuit after unlocking the Museum: dig up relics, appraise with Tangrowth, trade duplicates with Gimmighoul for unique furniture.
Save Rainbow Feathers (from Ho-Oh) and Silver Wings (from Lugia) for Gimmighoul. These trade for the best exclusive furniture items.
For multi-piece fossils like Aerodactyl (5 pieces), be patient. Fossil pieces drop randomly and completing a full set takes time.
Check the hidden chamber behind the Withered Wasteland Pokemon Center early. Knowing about the Mysterious Slate mural motivates you to collect slates as they appear.
Check behind structures, under bridges, and in elevated areas for hidden glowing blocks that are easy to miss during normal exploration.
