Remodeling lets you change the appearance of an existing house in Pokemon Pokopia without demolishing and rebuilding it from scratch. By placing a new building kit onto an existing structure, you can swap its design while keeping the same location. This only works on houses originally built with a building kit. Houses constructed from individual blocks cannot be remodeled and must be demolished manually.
Remodeling is faster and cheaper than a full demolish-and-rebuild, since you only need a new kit rather than all the original construction materials. It is a popular method for refreshing your island's look without starting over.
Before remodeling, you need to understand the four building kit sizes available in Pokopia. The new kit must match the size of the existing house for a remodel to work.
Kit Size | Footprint | Interior Size | Pokemon Capacity | Build Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Den | 2x2 | 4x3 | 1 (small/medium only) | 15 minutes |
Hut (Fixed) | 3x3 | 6x5 | 1 | 1 hour |
Cottage (Fixed) | 5x4 | 10x8 | 2 | Next day |
House | 8x6 | 14x10 (2 floors) | 4 (2 per floor) | Next day |
There are also Hut (Blocks) and Cottage (Blocks) variants that hold up to 4 Pokemon each, but block-type kits create block houses that cannot be remodeled later. For more details on all kit types, see the Building Kits Guide.
Each kit size comes in four visual styles. The style is purely cosmetic and does not affect capacity, interior layout, or functionality:
Style | Description |
|---|---|
Natural, plant-themed exterior | |
Sand | Desert-themed sandy exterior |
Rocky, stone-built exterior | |
City | Modern, urban-style exterior |
When remodeling, you can switch between styles freely as long as the kit size matches. For example, you can remodel a Leaf Cottage into a Stone Cottage, but you cannot remodel a Cottage into a Hut.
Get a matching building kit: Purchase or craft a new building kit from the PC Shop or find one while exploring. The kit must be the same size as the existing house. Check the kit's description to confirm its size category.
Empty the house: Remove all furniture and all resident Pokemon from the building. The remodel will not proceed if anything remains inside. Store removed furniture in a nearby Storage Box so you can quickly refurnish afterward.
Place the new kit: Set the new building kit down on top of the existing building. Walk up to the structure and place the kit as you would place any other item. The game will prompt you to confirm the remodel.
Assign Builder Pokemon: A Pokemon with the Build specialty is always required for construction. Assign one or more Builder Pokemon to the project through the construction sign that appears.
Wait for construction: Builder Pokemon will work on the remodel over time. The new exterior replaces the old one once construction finishes. Build times vary by kit size (see table above).
Refurnish: After the remodel is complete, place your furniture back inside and reassign Pokemon residents. The interior layout follows the new kit's design.
Understanding the difference between fixed and block houses is important because it determines whether a house can be remodeled:
Feature | Fixed House (Building Kit) | Block House |
|---|---|---|
Built with | A Building Kit item | Individual blocks placed by hand |
Can be remodeled? | Yes, with a same-size kit | No. Must demolish and rebuild. |
Interior size | Bigger inside than outside dimensions | Matches block dimensions exactly |
Furniture placement | Half-block spacing (more precise) | Full-block spacing |
How to move | Use a Relocation Kit | Must break blocks manually with Rock Smash, Rollout, or Magnet Rise |
How to demolish | Use a Demolition Kit | Break blocks manually |
Max Pokemon capacity | 1 to 4 depending on size | Up to 4 |
In addition to swapping styles, you can upgrade a house to a larger size by placing a bigger Building Kit over the existing structure. For example, placing a Cottage kit over a Hut will upgrade the Hut to a Cottage. The new structure replaces the old one and provides a larger interior and higher Pokemon capacity.
However, you cannot downsize a house. A Cottage cannot be replaced with a Hut, and a House cannot be replaced with a Cottage. If you want a smaller building in the same spot, you must demolish the existing structure first and then build the smaller kit. For details on demolishing, see How to Demolish Houses.
Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
Original structure | Must be a fixed house built with a building kit. Block-built houses cannot be remodeled. |
Kit size | The new building kit must match the existing building's dimensions exactly (for style swaps) or be larger (for upgrades). |
Interior cleared | All furniture and Pokemon must be removed before the remodel can begin. |
Builder Pokemon | At least one Pokemon with the Build specialty must be assigned to the construction project. |
Kit style | Any of the four styles (Leaf, Sand, Stone, City) can be applied regardless of the original style. |
Houses constructed from blocks cannot be remodeled. You must demolish a block house and rebuild it with a new design.
You cannot downsize a house through remodeling. Downsizing requires demolition and a fresh build.
The remodel replaces the exterior only. Interior space and layout follow the new kit's design, so the room dimensions may change between styles of the same size.
If you do not have a kit that matches the current building's size (or a larger one for an upgrade), you cannot remodel that particular house.
The house location does not change during a remodel. If you want to move the house, use a Relocation Kit instead.
Remodeling is faster and cheaper than demolishing and rebuilding from scratch, since you only need a new kit rather than all the original materials. Use it whenever you just want a style change.
Store removed furniture in a nearby Storage Box so you can quickly refurnish the house after the remodel completes.
Check available kit designs at the PC Shop or the Pokemon Center shop before starting. Different regions unlock different building kit styles.
Builder Pokemon with higher friendship levels may complete construction faster. Keep your Build-specialty Pokemon happy with their preferred habitats.
