Overview
Savage Axe is a Phantom Edge in Phantom Blade Zero. It is a heavy axe that specializes in charged strikes dealing massive Sha-Chi damage. As a Phantom Edge, it is used as a secondary weapon that complements the player's equipped primary blade.

Charged Strike System
The Savage Axe's primary mechanic is its charged attacks. Holding the attack input increases the damage and Sha-Chi impact of the next strike. A fully charged cleave can deal enough posture damage to stagger even boss-level enemies in a single hit. The charge time creates a risk-reward dynamic: longer charges deal more damage but leave the player vulnerable during the wind-up.
Experienced players use windows created by Weapon Switching or Ghostep to safely charge the Savage Axe. Switch to the primary blade, execute a combo, Ghostep behind the enemy, then unleash a fully charged axe strike into their exposed back.
Charging Safely
The charged cleave's wind-up is long enough that few enemies will let the player finish it uncontested. The standard solution is to manufacture an opening rather than wait for one. The most reliable openings come from Weapon Switching: commit to a primary-blade combo, then swap to Savage Axe at the end of the combo so the charge starts under the cover of the player's own offense.
Another option is Ghost Steps. A successful Ghostep places the player behind the enemy with a brief invulnerability window. Beginning the charge during that window means the strike lands on the enemy's back as it turns, often before any counter-attack can start.
Posture Damage and Stagger
A fully charged cleave is one of the highest single-hit posture sources in the game. Against most regular enemies, a fully charged strike from neutral is overkill. Against bosses, the same hit can fill a large portion of the stagger meter, opening a critical strike window. Two consecutive fully charged strikes against most boss types will stagger them outright.
Sha-Chi Generation
Savage Axe contributes heavily to the Sha-Chi System because the charged strikes deal high Sha-Chi impact, not just damage. A single charged cleave can fill enough Sha-Chi to immediately enable a Phantom Edge's special ability, creating burst loops where the axe both staggers the enemy and powers up the next attack.
Recommended Encounters
Slow, telegraphed bosses are Savage Axe's strongest matchups. Coppermaul and similar heavy-attack opponents leave windows long enough to charge during their recovery frames. Tighter, more aggressive encounters like Tie Sha the Frenzy reduce the axe's value because the player cannot find safe charge windows; in those fights, the quick chop becomes the primary attack and the charged cleave is reserved for the rare openings created by parry-induced stuns.
