Flame is a boss in Phantom Blade Zero, a lion dance master held under the control of a mask. The name is the studio's own, given in the material accompanying the August 2026 gameplay deep dive, where the encounter closed the broadcast on roughly five unbroken minutes of fighting.
The Encounter
The fight opens with a ritual rather than a health bar. Soul takes a brush and dots the lion's eyes to wake it, borrowing the gesture that opens a real lion dance, where the eye-dotting is what animates the lion before it performs. Only once the eyes are dotted does the lion move.
From there the encounter runs in two phases. What separates it from the rest of the confirmed roster is the movement vocabulary: the attack animations read as dance steps before they read as attacks, so the usual habit of learning a boss by its tells has to work against a performance rhythm rather than a combat one.
How the Animation Was Built
The encounter is built on research rather than pastiche. The action team studied under a southern lion dance practitioner recognised as a holder of the tradition, then captured the specific rhythms of the form rather than approximating them.
Captured detail | What it feeds |
|---|---|
The waking | The opening beat after the eyes are dotted, before the lion commits to anything. |
The wave through the fur | The travelling ripple that runs along the body as the lion moves, which carries into how its attacks wind up. |
The blink | A small, readable pause built into the head, used as a tell. |
The working of the jaw | The mouth's open-and-close rhythm, which the fight uses as punctuation between strings. |
This sits alongside the wider approach described under Motion Capture and Choreography, where each weapon and each enemy is captured from a practitioner of the specific form rather than animated from a shared library.
The Mask
Flame is described as controlled by the mask rather than wearing it, which places the fight with the game's other possession and transformation motifs rather than with its purely human duels. What that control implies for the character underneath has not been detailed.
Outside the Game
A lion-head pendant modelled on the encounter is one of the physical items in the China-only collector's edition, which is itemised under Release Date and Platforms.
Status
Flame was shown as part of the August 2026 broadcast and has not been placed in a chapter or region publicly. The studio has said that every boss shown before launch is side content and that no main-story boss has been revealed, which applies here as well. See Bosses for the full roster and Hellwalker Mode for how boss behaviour changes at the higher difficulty tiers.
