Overview
Coppermaul, also known as Wan Jun, is a boss in Phantom Blade Zero. He is a massive, imposing figure who wields an enormous copper mace. Despite his intimidating size, Coppermaul has a distinctly baby-like face that creates an unsettling contrast with his violent fighting style. His encounter is notable for transitioning into a duo boss fight when the Red Wraith joins mid-battle.
Appearance
Coppermaul towers over Soul and most other characters in the game. His body is heavily muscled and disproportionately large, but his face retains soft, infantile features that give him an eerie, almost pitiful quality. He carries a copper mace that is nearly as tall as he is, and his movements combine raw power with surprising bursts of speed.
Combat behavior
Coppermaul's attacks are built around his massive mace. He uses wide sweeping strikes that cover large areas, overhead slams that create shockwaves, and charging rushes that close distance quickly. His attacks are telegraphed but punishing if they connect. The window between his swings is where most of the player's damage opportunities exist.
Item | Description |
|---|---|
Sweeping strikes | horizontal mace swings that cover a 180-degree arc in front of him |
Overhead slam | a heavy downward strike that sends out a ground shockwave |
Charging rush | Coppermaul lowers his shoulder and charges forward, mace extended |
Ground pound | repeated mace strikes into the ground that create spreading cracks |
Phase transition
Partway through the fight, the Red Wraith enters the arena and joins the battle. This transforms the encounter from a straightforward power-based fight into a coordination challenge. While Coppermaul continues his heavy attacks, the Red Wraith darts around the periphery, striking from unexpected angles. Managing both enemies simultaneously is the core challenge of the encounter.
Strategy
Before the Red Wraith arrives, focus on learning Coppermaul's attack patterns and dealing consistent damage. Use Ghostep to teleport behind him after his slower attacks. Once the duo phase begins, prioritize keeping both enemies in your field of view. Coppermaul's attacks are easier to dodge, so most players find it more effective to focus damage on the Red Wraith first while evading Coppermaul's wide swings.
