Overview
NPC interactions in Outbound provide optional tasks and context for the game's world. While Outbound is primarily a freeform exploration and building game without a traditional quest log, NPCs found at landmarks and across the world's biomes offer delivery tasks, trade opportunities, and environmental storytelling.
Delivery and Hauling
The most prominent NPC interaction type involves delivery and hauling tasks. NPCs at various locations need items transported from one place to another. The demo includes hints of this system, with players described as being "that one friend with the pickup truck" who helps people move things. The camper van serves as the transport vehicle, and hauling items for people is a natural fit for the game's road-trip identity.
Delivery tasks reward the player with resources, unique items, or blueprints not available through Signal Towers. Completing deliveries may also unlock new NPCs or expand trading options at specific landmarks.
Landmark NPCs
NPCs are primarily found at the game's landmarks, such as Sunbeam Acres Farm, Lilly's Windmill, and the Fire Lookout. Each NPC provides context for the location through dialogue and may offer tasks related to their surroundings. For example, an NPC at a farm might ask for help gathering or transporting crops.
Environmental Storytelling
Many NPCs provide world-building context rather than gameplay tasks. They tell stories about the near-future utopian setting, explain how the world arrived at its current state, and add personality to the landmarks. The writing complements the environmental storytelling found in items and notes scattered across The Outdoors and The Coast biomes.
Multiplayer
In co-op sessions, NPC interactions are shared. All players in the session can participate in delivery tasks, and rewards are distributed to the group. This encourages cooperative play where one player drives while others gather requested items along the route.
Tips
Visit every landmark and speak to all NPCs. Some offer unique items or blueprints that cannot be obtained elsewhere.
Delivery tasks are a good way to earn rare resources early in the game, before you have unlocked higher-tier crafting recipes.
Keep spare common resources in your van's storage. Some NPC requests can be fulfilled immediately if you have the right materials on hand.
NPCs may appear at different times of day. If a landmark seems empty, return during a different part of the day-night cycle.
