Controls and camera system overview
Outbound supports both keyboard-and-mouse and gamepad input. The game features two primary gameplay modes — on-foot exploration and van driving — each with their own control layout. Players can switch between perspectives and adjust settings to match their preferred playstyle.
On foot, the game uses a third-person camera that follows the player character at a comfortable distance, providing a wide view of the environment. When driving the camper van, players can switch between a third-person exterior view and a first-person cockpit view. First-person driving is more immersive, letting players experience the scenery through the windshield, while third-person offers better spatial awareness for tight maneuvering.
While on foot, players can walk, run, gather resources by interacting with objects, use tools, and command the dog companion. The interaction system highlights nearby objects that can be collected or used, simplifying resource gathering without requiring precise aiming.
Driving the van uses standard vehicle controls — accelerate, brake, steer. The van's handling is affected by terrain type and the total weight of installed modules. Heavier builds with more workstations and building components may feel different from a stripped-down, lightweight configuration.
Entering building mode switches to a grid-based placement interface. Players select modules from their available catalog, preview placement with a ghost outline, and confirm the position. Items can be rotated and repositioned freely within the van's building boundaries.
Outbound supports 17 languages at launch, including English, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, German, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, among others.
