Expanded Ono No Takamura with 'old master' framing, TGS 2025 plot role, voice actors
Ono No Takamura is one of the confirmed allied characters in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, joining Musashi Miyamoto in his fight to clear the Genma from Edo-era Kyoto.
The real Ono no Takamura (802 to 853) was a Heian-era scholar, poet, and official at the imperial court in Kyoto, far earlier in Japanese history than the early-Edo period the game is set in. The game leans on that scholar framing but reworks him as a venerable old master swordsman as well, sitting among Musashi's supernatural peers rather than as a civilian witness.
Capcom has confirmed that Ono No Takamura's in-game counterpart is also an Oni Gauntlet bearer. That makes him the third confirmed gauntlet-wielder in the story alongside Musashi and the rival Sasaki Ganryu. The Tokyo Game Show 2025 story trailer describes him as capable of destroying Genma with ease, which fits his framing as a mentor figure to Musashi.
Capcom's team-framing puts him in the magic role of the allied cast, sitting between the raw power of Lady Oni and the eccentric support brought by Izumo No Okuni. His role in the plot runs through both characters: Lady Oni guides Musashi to him from inside the gauntlet, and Izumo no Okuni is shown to have sought him out earlier in her own search for a way to defeat the Genma.
