Lion Dogs are a rescuable collectible in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. They are stone-guardian creatures scattered across Kyoto and its surrounds, and freeing them is one of the game's largest optional activities. Community documentation of the shipped game puts the full set at 36.

How They Work

Lion Dogs begin appearing partway through the campaign rather than from the start, and once the activity is live they also populate maps the player has already been through, so an early area revisited later will have them. Each one is marked on the map once its region is reachable, which makes them a sweep activity rather than a hunt.

Rescued Lion Dogs are reported to Lady Murasaki, who keeps track of the count and hands out rewards at fixed thresholds. Each rescue also files a folk-tale entry into the game's in-game record alongside the Curious Cases material.

Reward Thresholds

Rewards arrive at every sixth rescue, six times in total. All six are cosmetic sword appearances, which change how Musashi's blade looks without altering its performance in battle.

Because the thresholds are evenly spaced, there is no reason to stop partway. A player who has passed 30 is two-thirds of the way from the fifth reward to the last one already.

Completion Rate

Two achievements track the activity, and the gap between them is one of the widest in the game. About 63.8 percent of players have rescued their first Lion Dog, while about 24.3 percent have rescued them all. That spread is the clearest single measure of how much of the optional layer most players leave behind.

Where They Are

Community documentation distributes the set unevenly, with by far the largest share in the Eastern Kyoto hub region and smaller clusters at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Nijo Castle, Mount Oe and Arashiyama. The per-region breakdown published so far does not reconcile cleanly against the stated total of 36, so the total is the figure to trust and the regional split should be treated as approximate.

One planning point matters more than the locations. Eastern Kyoto closes permanently once the endgame sequence begins, and it holds the majority of the set, so any Lion Dogs left outstanding at that point cannot be collected on that run. The activity has to be finished before the endgame is triggered, or carried to a later run through New Game Plus, which preserves the Lion Dog collection.

Official Material

Capcom gave Lion Dogs a dedicated page on the game's official site, presented as a Lion Dog Chamber hosted by Lady Murasaki, where visitors could interact with the creatures and download a wallpaper. It is one of the few optional systems the marketing site covered directly, which is a reasonable signal of how central Capcom considered the activity.
