Recorded both co-op party-size figures on record with their sourcing and dates rather than picking one, added the studio description of what co-op sessions do, and added a section stating the game is not an MMO
Of Peaks and Tides supports online co-op alongside solo play. The studio's chief technology officer has described co-op for up to ten players, and a lower figure of four also circulated from the same event, so the party cap is not settled. The entire game is playable solo, but the crafting, Base Building, and combat systems are designed to scale with multiple players, allowing coordinated strategies and shared construction projects.
Of Peaks and Tides (App ID 3757140) offers two play modes: Single-player and Online Co-op. Family Sharing is enabled on Steam, allowing household members to share the game.
Feature | Description |
|---|---|
Shared exploration | All players explore the same open world together. Discoveries and map progress are shared among the group. |
Coordinated combat | Enemy difficulty scales with player count. Players can set traps, flank enemies, and use environmental tactics cooperatively. |
Collaborative building | Multiple players can contribute to the same base simultaneously. One player gathers materials while others construct. |
Crafting division | Players can specialize in different crafting areas, producing complementary equipment and structures. |
The studio's own description of co-op names three activities: fighting giant divine beasts together, crafting, and building. Those are the same three systems the solo game is built on, so co-op is framed as the same game with more hands rather than as a separate mode with its own content.
The game is fully playable alone. Solo players have access to all the same systems and content. The difficulty is balanced for a single player, though certain encounters and building projects are easier with a group.
No player-versus-player combat mode has been announced as of the Gamescom 2025 demo. The current focus is entirely on cooperative and solo play.
Multiplayer sessions are online-only. Further details on matchmaking, hosting model, progression synchronization, and difficulty scaling have not been disclosed.
Two different player counts are on record from Tokyo Game Show 2025, given two days apart, and neither has been withdrawn or restated since. In an interview published on 2025-09-27 the chief technology officer said players cooperate with up to ten companions to fight giant divine beasts, craft, and build. A hands-on report published on 2025-09-25 relayed second hand that the shipping version would support multiplayer for up to four players.
Figure | How it was stated | Date |
|---|---|---|
Up to 10 players | Stated directly by the chief technology officer in an attributed interview | 2025-09-27 |
Up to 4 players | Relayed second hand in a hands-on report from the same event | 2025-09-25 |
The ten-player figure has the stronger sourcing: it comes from the studio directly and in an attributed interview, while the four-player figure was reported at one remove. That is not the same as being confirmed. As of 2026-09-12 the studio has published no single authoritative cap on any of its own storefront, site or announcement surfaces, so this page records both numbers and treats neither as final. Expect a small invited group rather than a large persistent server either way.
Co-op runs on synchronised physics rather than on synchronised positions alone. CyancookGames has said that a barrel kicked across a camp or a tree brought down in a thunderstorm resolves the same way on every player screen at the same moment. That is what makes the environmental tactics described on the Combat and Physics System pages usable as a group rather than only alone, and it is the studio stated reason for treating deep physics synchronisation as a requirement of the co-op design instead of an optimisation.
The chief technology officer has stated plainly that Of Peaks and Tides is not a massively multiplayer online game. Co-op is a small session of players sharing one world, not a persistent shared server with a population passing through it. Storefront and aggregator genre listings that file the game under massively multiplayer are contradicted by that statement and should not be used as evidence of an MMO design.
The Gamescom 2025 hands-on focused on solo play, so detailed co-op feedback was limited. CyancookGames' Offline Playtests 2026 are the first scheduled venue where co-op systems will be tested at scale outside the studio. Expect refinements to scaling, building permissions, and progression sync to be announced after those events run.
Of Peaks and Tides confirms full controller support alongside keyboard and mouse. The Steam store listing records the following input categories, so Xbox pads are covered by full controller support rather than by a separate listing:
Input | Status |
|---|---|
Keyboard and Mouse | Standard support |
Full Controller Support | Confirmed |
DualShock Controllers | Confirmed |
Co-op sessions are expected to support mixed-input parties, with friends able to join from controller or keyboard configurations on the same lobby.
Steam Family Sharing is enabled on the store listing. A purchased copy of the game can be shared with household members through Steam's Family Sharing system, subject to the standard Family Sharing rules.
