PSSR Upscaling
PSSR is Sony's hardware-accelerated upscaling solution introduced with the PS5 Pro. Volumetric Fog
Volumetric Fog is a rendering technique that simulates how light interacts with airborne particles such as fog, mist, and smoke. Rather than applying a flat post-processing fog overlay, volumetric fog calculates the fog's interaction with light sources at each point in the scene, producing realistic god-rays, light shafts, and depth cues. In Hethereau's neon-lit cityscape, this means streetlight beams cut through evening fog with believable scattering, neon signs cast colored light through humid air, and weather effects like rain and mist add depth rather than washing out the scene.

Distance Field Ambient Occlusion
Distance Field Ambient Occlusion (DFAO) calculates how exposed each point in a scene is to ambient lighting based on signed distance fields stored for the geometry. The result is soft, natural-looking shadows in crevices, corners, and recesses where direct lighting would not reach. DFAO works at longer ranges than typical screen-space occlusion methods, producing more realistic shadowing in open environments like rooftops, alleyways, and the negative space between buildings.
