Expanded with confirmed details on Esper awakening, abilities, roles, and relationship to Anomalies
Espers are humans who have awakened supernatural abilities through prolonged exposure to Anomalies. In the world of Hethereau, these individuals occupy a unique position: they are still human, but their powers set them apart from ordinary citizens. All playable characters in Neverness to Everness are Espers, each wielding their own distinct abilities in combat and exploration.
The process by which ordinary humans develop Esper abilities is called Encroachment. Through sustained contact with anomalies, the body and mind undergo unpredictable changes. Not everyone exposed to anomalies becomes an Esper; the conditions for awakening appear to vary from person to person. Once awakened, an Esper's powers are unique to that individual and cannot be replicated by others.
The protagonist of Neverness to Everness is known as Esper Zero. Unlike other Espers, Esper Zero possesses the rare ability to see the true essence of anomalies and communicate with them directly. This power makes the protagonist invaluable to organizations like the Bureau of Anomaly Control and Eibon Antique Shop. Esper Zero was awakened prior to the events of the game through the Encroachment process.
Each Esper wields one of six elemental attributes. These attributes form a circular wheel that governs the Esper Cycle combat system, where certain elements have advantages or disadvantages against others. The six confirmed elements are:
Element | Color | Description |
|---|---|---|
Cosmos | White | Associated with celestial and spatial forces. Wielded by characters such as Hotori and Edgar. |
Anima | Teal | Connected to life force and natural energy. Nanally and Mint are known Anima users. |
Incantation | Pink | Tied to spoken or written power. Sakiri, Baicang, and Adler wield Incantation. |
Chaos | Purple | Related to entropy and disorder. Lacrimosa and Daffodil use Chaos-type abilities. |
Psyche | Blue | Rooted in mental and psychic forces. Fadia is a confirmed Psyche user. |
Lakshana | Yellow | Connected to perception and observation. Skia is a known Lakshana wielder. |
The interactions between these six elements are central to elemental reactions in combat. Building a team with complementary elements allows players to trigger powerful chain reactions during fights.
Esper abilities are unique to each individual and reflect their personality and background. For instance, Nanally wields anti-gravity powers, Hotori has time-related abilities, and Hathor possesses speed-focused powers. These abilities serve both combat and traversal purposes. Espers can use their powers to run up buildings, dash across gaps, and reach areas that ordinary humans cannot access.
In battle, Esper abilities translate into distinct playstyles. The combat system divides character roles into three broad categories:
Damage: Burst DPS, Main DPS, and DoT (damage over time) specialists.
Survival: Healers who restore team HP and shielders who absorb incoming damage.
Buff: Support characters that enhance ally performance through various buffs.
Each Esper falls into one or more of these roles, and building an effective team means balancing damage output with healing, shielding, and support. Esper Ranks (S-Class, A-Rank, etc.) indicate a character's rarity and overall power level within the gacha system.
