Death Penalty
September 16, 2026 at 02:40 PM
Initial version (2026-09-16)
When you die in Monsters & Memories, your items stay on your corpse and you respawn at your bind point. By default your bind point is the location where you first logged in to that character, although it can be changed through spells and other mechanisms. Recovering what you left behind is the corpse run, and it is a deliberate part of the game's pacing rather than an oversight.
Expiry depends on whether the corpse is carrying anything and on the character's level. A stripped corpse disappears quickly; a loaded one at any level past the first gives you a full week.
Corpse contents | Character level | Expires after |
|---|---|---|
No items | Levels 1 to 4 | 30 minutes |
No items | Level 5 and above | 3 hours |
With items | Level 1 | 2 hours |
With items | Level 2 and above | 7 days |
An expired corpse is not a lost corpse. Visit your city's local Priest of the Matswar to have it summoned for you. See Starting Cities.
Corpses can be dragged, but only with the owner's permission, and the permission is explicit. The studio's own advice is to only consent people you trust, since an untrustworthy helper can hide your corpse rather than move it.
Command | Effect |
|---|---|
/consent <playername> | Allows that player to drag your corpse. |
/consent group | Allows your current group to drag your corpse. See Grouping. |
/deny <playername> | Revokes consent from that player. |
/deny group | Revokes consent from your group. |
/corpse | Drags your own corpse. See Interface and Commands. |
Some classes have access to resurrection spells that summon you to your corpse, and the more powerful versions also return some of the experience points lost on death. The Paladin top tier, Revival, is learned at level 56 and returns 75 percent of lost experience. As of September 2026 the studio has not published a full table of which resurrection tier each class gets at which level.
Cantrips are the one published softener on the death penalty, and they are restricted. The studio grants them to what it calls the true caster classes: Clerics, Druids, Elementalists, Enchanters, Necromancers, Shamans and Wizards. A cantrip is one of your memorized spells, assigned to be retained on death even if you do not have your spellbook available.
The first cantrip is granted at level 4, with additional cantrips added at specific intervals as you level. In the interface, available cantrip numbers appear orange and assigned ones appear blue.
Casters have an extra complication. The spellbook must be equipped in a belt slot, which is not the same thing as the waist slot, in order to scribe or memorize spells. It is not required in order to cast them. But because it is an equipped item, it drops on death along with everything else, which is exactly the situation cantrips exist to cover. See Items and Equipment.
Bring a light source. A corpse in an unlit zone at night is a corpse you will not find. See Items and Equipment.
Know your bind. Gate and similar spells return the caster to their bind point, so where you bound determines how far the run is. See Travel.
Set /hidecorpse before you need it. The default filter is looted, and the developer recommends pc.
Consent before the pull, not after. You cannot type /consent while dead and elsewhere if your group has already moved on.
