Adventurers are the playable characters of Monster Hunter Outlanders. Official material describes them as coming from all over the world with a wide variety of backgrounds and skills, and states that each one possesses unique abilities that support expeditions into uncharted lands and ecosystems. Characters met through the story can become allies and can then be controlled directly, so the roster grows as the campaign progresses. Nine have been revealed, and the official character page notes that more are to come.
Classes
Every Adventurer carries one of three class labels. The same three labels are applied to buddies, which suggests they describe a role in a party rather than a character archetype.
Class | Revealed Adventurers | Revealed buddy |
|---|---|---|
Assault | Pyro, Luka, Ouyang Varen, Midori | Palico |
Support | Arkaya, Madelyn | Trillan |
Disruptor | Keres, Raya, Pepper | Rutaco |
Revealed Adventurers
Each Adventurer is tied to a single weapon type, and the personal skills described for them modify how that weapon behaves. Two characters sharing a weapon do not play the same way: Keres and Raya both carry Dual Blades but pull on different parts of the weapon's kit, and Arkaya and Ouyang Varen both carry a Lance while building entirely different resources.
Adventurer | Class | Weapon | Confirmed traits |
|---|---|---|---|
Pyro | Assault | Turns the pain of battle into power. Attacks he endures fuel his moves, allowing earth-shattering blows with high burst damage. | |
Keres | Disruptor | Chains rapid strikes into relentless combos at high speed. Some skills unlock enhanced follow-ups for an unending flurry of slashes. | |
Luka | Assault | A lightning-wreathed bow with high mobility. Some skills power up the Thunder Coating on arrows on precise casts, and coated arrows send crackling arcs clean through the target. | |
Arkaya | Support | Builds Resolve through a steady stream of attacks. Some skills consume all Resolve for a devastating blow that also grants a large shield. | |
Raya | Disruptor | Swift, agile blades and fluid, dance-like evasion. Some skills consume stamina to build her Demon Gauge faster. | |
Ouyang Varen | Assault | A sturdy lance with strong guard capability, using the shield to deflect. Certain skills build Impetus, which powers his thrusts for increased damage. | |
Madelyn | Support | A precise bow paired with medicines and Spores. Certain skills apply Spores that can be detonated for damage while boosting her and nearby allies. | |
Midori | Assault | A long sword hidden inside her shamisen, with graceful evasive movement. Some skills build her Spirit Gauge faster. | |
Pepper | Disruptor | Powerful shots at range. Some skills send her airborne, letting her fire rapidly from midair. |
Personal Resources
Several Adventurers carry a named resource of their own, layered on top of whatever the weapon already tracks. These are the ones confirmed so far.
Resource | Adventurer | How it works |
|---|---|---|
Resolve | Arkaya | Built by a steady stream of attacks, spent all at once for a heavy blow plus a shield |
Impetus | Ouyang Varen | Built by certain skills, increases thrust damage |
Thunder Coating | Luka | Applied to arrows and powered up by precise casts, producing arcs that pierce through |
Spores | Madelyn | Applied by certain skills, detonated for damage and to buff her and nearby allies |
Demon Gauge | Raya | A Dual Blades resource that some of her skills fill faster by consuming stamina |
Spirit Gauge | Midori | A Long Sword resource that some of her skills build faster |
Buddies
Every Adventurer is accompanied by a buddy. Three have been revealed. The Palico is familiar from the wider series and is described as having journeyed to Aesoland alongside the Adventurers; Trillan and Rutaco are original to this game and native to the island. Each has a distinct personality expressed through appearance and skills, and official material states that with proper nurturing they grow into more dependable companions.
Buddy | Class | Origin | Confirmed traits |
|---|---|---|---|
Palico | Assault | Travelled to Aesoland with the Adventurers | Skilled with various weapons and items |
Trillan | Support | Native to Aesoland | Uses its voice to support Adventurers |
Rutaco | Disruptor | Native to Aesoland | Uses tools and Radiantite to build |
Acquisition
How Adventurers are unlocked has not been fully explained. Story progression is one route, since official material says characters encountered through the story become allies and can be controlled. Separately, an item called a Standard Contract appears throughout the pre-registration reward tiers, and one Adventurer, Raya, has been labelled SR when offered as a milestone reward. Those two facts together point at a rarity-graded acquisition system, but no first-party source has described it.
