Aesoland is the island on which Monster Hunter Outlanders takes place. It is original to this game and does not appear elsewhere in the series. Official material has described it consistently since the first closed beta announcement: a land divided into multiple regions according to terrain and weather conditions, with fields that connect seamlessly rather than loading as separate zones.
Regions and Terrain
The announcement material named forests, swamps and deserts among the environments, and described them as seamlessly connected fields that can be explored and hunted in on a phone. Region boundaries are drawn by terrain and weather, which means climate is treated as a structuring element of the map rather than as decoration. How many regions exist and what they are called has not been published.
Confirmed environment | Notes |
|---|---|
Forest | Named in the original announcement overview, and the stated home range of Rathalos |
Swamp | Named in the original announcement overview |
Desert | Named in the original announcement overview |
Building on the Island
Aesoland is meant to be modified. A building system lets players set up field tools such as launchers, ziplines and gliding facilities in order to explore each region, and official material states that this both allows engagement with the wilderness from a variety of angles and creates opportunities to find special items and important clues tied to an assignment. Rutaco, one of the three buddy types and a species native to the island, is described as skilled at using tools and Radiantite to build, which places the building system inside the setting rather than beside it.
Radiantite
The island's defining resource is Radiantite, a mineral unique to it. Monsters affected by it become Radiant species, altered in appearance and ability. Some Aesoland monsters interact with the mineral directly: the Radiant Kulu-Ya-Ku is described as detecting Radiantite buried underground and excavating it for use as weapons, and the Radiant Anjanath as digging it out with its jaws and hurling it at enemies.
Inhabitants
Aesoland has people. Official material about Ruger Aidal states that tales of the creature have long been passed down among the people of Aesoland, which confirms a settled population with its own oral history. Two of the three revealed buddy types, Trillan and Rutaco, are native to the island; the Palico travelled there alongside the Adventurers.
The wildlife mixes original creatures with familiar ones. Monsters from the wider series confirmed as appearing on Aesoland include Rathalos, Rathian, Diablos, Kushala Daora, Anjanath and Nergigante, several of them with Radiant forms. A Pink Rathian, described as a subspecies with vibrant pink scales that uses its toxic tail more deftly than an ordinary Rathian, has also been shown.
