This page covers the characters Insomniac has confirmed for Marvel's Wolverine. Because the story is original rather than an adaptation, a character existing in the comics does not mean they appear here, and the details below are limited to what official game material and hands-on coverage have actually shown.
Character | Role |
|---|---|
Logan / Wolverine | The player character. A mutant with an adamantium skeleton and no memory of his past. |
Jean Grey | A powerful telekinetic and a new ally, protecting a group of captured mutant teens. |
Team X member. Shifts through identities in combat and can be commanded in some fights. | |
Team X member and Logan's most abrasive teammate. | |
Nathaniel Essex | Formed Team X. Held captive by Trask when the game opens. |
Anti-mutant billionaire industrialist. The campaign's principal antagonist. | |
Tyger Tiger | Proprietor of the Princess Bar in Madripoor. |
Walter Langowski | An acquaintance of Logan's who is kidnapped by The Hand during the campaign. |
A villain encountered during the opening mission. | |
Described by Insomniac as one of the game's big antagonists. | |
Callisto | A mutant known only through a journal Logan can read in her garage in Vancouver. |
Official material has become more specific about who stands where. Sabretooth and Mystique are now named outright as members of Team X rather than as allies working under Nathaniel Essex, and the Launch Trailer is framed around Logan, Jean Grey and the members of the team standing together against Bolivar Trask. The antagonists named alongside Trask in that same official description are Omega Red and Deathstrike. See Story and Setting.
Logan
Logan opens the game with his adamantium skeleton and without his memories. Mike Daly has described this version of the character as cynical and candid, someone who keeps people at a distance, and the team has been clear that he is not Old Man Logan. Eric Monacelli of Marvel Games has called him an amalgamation, a little older than a lot of the canonical versions.
The physical build is a deliberate middle ground. Marcus Smith has put the in-game height at roughly five foot seven, between the comics' five foot three and the taller screen version, and has described him as five hundred pounds of adamantium skeleton. That weight is not just characterisation: it is the stated reason the traversal system works the way it does.
He is voiced and performed by Liam McIntyre; see Cast and Crew.
Jean Grey

Jean Grey is a powerful telekinetic and the emergent leader of the captured mutants. She is a new ally rather than a returning teammate, and she and Logan can perform takedowns together.
Because the X-Men do not exist in this setting, she is working alone. She is protecting a group of mutant teens with no organisation behind her, which is a large part of why she and Logan end up in the same fight. Krizia Bajos, who performs the role, has described the relationship between the two characters as a cosmic connection.
Her powers feed straight into the moment-to-moment game rather than sitting in cutscenes. Enemies she blinds can be taken down silently, which is one of the clearest published examples of an ally ability opening up an option Logan does not have on his own.
Mystique

Mystique is one of the Team X members Logan returns to. In combat she shifts through identities as the situation needs, and in the Sentinel Prototype encounter she is a commandable ally who can be directed to fire a sniper shot.
She also carries one of the game's quieter scenes. At the Princess Bar she pushes Logan into a friendly but vulnerable game of Never Have I Ever, with the player deciding his answers by choosing whether he drinks.
Sabretooth

Sabretooth is the third of Team X's three confirmed members and the source of most of its internal friction. He antagonises Logan through the opening, calls him runt, and at one point body-slams him at the Princess Bar. Insomniac has noted that Logan stands about as tall as Sabretooth's navel and that Sabretooth feels spurned by Logan's original exit from the team. Hands-on previews describe him being called Victor in dialogue.
In combat he is an ally you can call on, though Marcus Smith has framed his contribution with some affection as being like stealing your kills.
He is also a combat partner in a fairly literal sense. A hands-on session with the Sentinel Prototype fight describes a throw-based team move performed with him, where Logan is launched at a target rather than closing the distance himself.
Nathaniel Essex
Nathaniel Essex formed Team X to help protect mutants, and he is the one who found Logan years earlier in a feral state. When the game opens he is Trask's captive, and freeing him is the objective of the first mission.
The game refers to him only by his civilian name, and no powers, motives, or affiliations beyond forming the team have been confirmed for him. Anything further about the character comes from the comics rather than from this game.
Insomniac has since set out the opening in its own words: Logan rejoins his former team for a critical mission to infiltrate Trask's outpost and save Nathaniel Essex, and that is what sets the story in motion. He is a rescue target at that point, not an opponent. Coverage that attaches a comics alias to him is going past anything the game itself has said, and this wiki does not carry it.
A building called the Essex Institute has also been described as a hub Logan can move through between missions, likened to a school for gifted mutants. Only one account of it exists so far and Insomniac has not detailed it, so treat the description as provisional.
Bolivar Trask
Bolivar Trask is an anti-mutant billionaire industrialist driven by a fanatical belief in human superiority. He funds the Reavers who abduct mutants for him, builds the Ability Inhibitors that shut mutant powers down, and constructs the Sentinel Prototype. He also built a fake town for one of his experiments, which the campaign visits. His forces and hardware are covered on Enemies and Factions.
Coverage of the Launch Trailer sharpens his method. The technology he has built detects mutants by their X-gene, which puts anyone carrying it at risk, and the Sentinels are how he acts on what it finds.
Tyger Tiger
Tyger Tiger runs the Princess Bar, Logan's preferred watering hole in the Lowtown district of Madripoor, and serves as the anchor to that part of the world. Official material sometimes shortens the name to Tyger. She is played by Kelly Hu.
Walter Langowski
Walter Langowski appears during the campaign as someone Logan knows. In one scene he tries to cheer Logan up by having him search his office for a vinyl of their favourite song, and later he is kidnapped by The Hand, which sets off the rooftop chase through Madripoor.
Two things are worth flagging. His name has appeared in both the Langowski and Langkowski spellings across coverage, and no official material settles which the game uses. He has also been described elsewhere as a fourth member of Team X. No official material confirms that, so this page does not list him as one.
Callisto
Callisto is named through the game's own trophy data rather than through a trailer or an official post. A journal belonging to her can be read in her garage in Vancouver, which places her somewhere in the Canadian stretch of the campaign. Nothing else has been published: no role, no affiliation, and no appearance in any released footage.
Antagonists

Omega Red is confirmed, described in official copy as boorish, and Logan has a run-in with him during the opening Telambang mission. Deathstrike has been described by Insomniac as one of the game's big antagonists and appears in a cinematic, though no role, fight, or abilities have been detailed; the name also appears as Lady Deathstrike in some licensor material.
Sentinels belong on the list as well. Insomniac frames them as a threat that emerges as Logan, Jean Grey and the members of Team X join the fight for mutant survival, and they recur through the campaign rather than turning up once. Trask's Reavers and The Hand supply the rank and file underneath all of them.
