Sun Bin was a real historical figure who lived during the Warring States period of ancient China (approximately 4th century BCE). He was a military strategist and a descendant (or student of the school) of Sun Tzu, the legendary author of The Art of War. Sun Bin's own military treatise, the Sun Bin Art of War, was thought lost for centuries until bamboo strips containing the text were rediscovered in a Han dynasty tomb in Shandong province in 1972.
Sun Bin is known for his rivalry with Pang Juan, a fellow student of the military strategist Guiguzi. According to historical accounts, Pang Juan grew jealous of Sun Bin's superior talent and had him falsely accused of a crime. Sun Bin was punished by having his kneecaps removed, leaving him permanently crippled. Despite this, Sun Bin went on to serve the state of Qi as a military advisor and orchestrated several famous victories against Pang Juan's forces, including the Battle of Maling, where Pang Juan was killed.
