Donghuang is described in the official Honor of Kings lore portal as the first human to ascend to a state similar to a superbeing. Originally a mortal, he caught a glimpse of Nuwa in Celestia and was consumed by the desire to become a deity himself. Through the Spell of Reincarnation, and by devouring the life of rivers, clouds, forests, and sunlight, he mastered power, evolution, and the endless cycle of reincarnation via the branches of the Tree of Reincarnation. He is a central antagonistic or morally ambiguous figure whose influence shapes several arcs of the main story.
The Spell of Reincarnation is presented in the lore portal as a forbidden technique that allows a practitioner to draw on the life force of the natural world itself. Donghuang used this technique to fuel his own transformation, consuming vast quantities of ambient life energy from rivers, clouds, forests, and sunlight. The process was not instantaneous; it required sustained effort and a willingness to absorb life from countless sources. The end result was that Donghuang became something new: "the first human similar to a superbeing," a being who had mastered three aspects of existence at once, namely power, evolution, and endless reincarnation.
The Tree of Reincarnation is the metaphysical structure through which Donghuang cycles his existence. Rather than dying and remaining dead, he passes through the tree's branches and re-emerges, carrying his consciousness and power forward. This gives him a functional immortality that sets him apart from ordinary humans and even from some of the weaker superbeings. It also makes him extremely difficult to permanently defeat; any victory over Donghuang is temporary unless it also addresses the tree itself.
Donghuang's ambition placed him in direct conflict with the superbeing establishment. He was one of the figures whose choices drove Primaera toward the War of the Gods, though the precise details of his faction alignment and his battles during that war are not fully disclosed in public lore materials. What is clear is that his ascent and his methods helped break the balance that Nuwa and the other superbeings had maintained, contributing to the collapse that eventually led to The Wilting.
Donghuang is often contrasted with the two other critical figures of the ancient era. Nuwa created civilization and later sealed the Ark to preserve the world. Diqun led a faction against Nuwa in the War of the Gods and was reduced to a disembodied consciousness. Donghuang, by contrast, is a human-origin figure who willed himself into superbeing status through forbidden means. The three of them represent three different models of divinity: creation (Nuwa), conflict (Diqun), and ambition (Donghuang).
