Combat System

Added Extended Look combat details (concealed and visible weapons, non-lethal limb shots, Focus, quick-time prompts, weapon brands), removed leak-derived zip-tie, human shield, surrender, prone, hand-switching, pickup animation and body looting claims into a scope note, removed prior-entry comparisons and an empty heading
Grand Theft Auto VI has a redesigned combat system. What is known about it comes from the official trailers, the August 2026 Extended Look showcase and previews around it. The changes affect how weapons are carried, selected and noticed by bystanders, and how players engage with enemies in vehicles, on foot, and in stealth, with an emphasis on more tactical, grounded confrontations.
The combat system is closely integrated with other gameplay mechanics, including the wanted system, character switching and the interaction system. Non-lethal options sit inside ordinary gunfights: shooting an enemy in the arm or leg can take them out of a fight without killing them.
The weapon wheel has been redesigned with a tabbed interface. Players can cycle between tabs for weapons, gear, and equipment using R1 (PlayStation) or RB (Xbox). The Extended Look also showed the weapon wheel flipping over to a second wheel of clothing and items, used on screen to put on a mask before a store robbery.

GTA VI introduces a realistic carry limit system that restricts how many weapons players can have on their person at any given time. Players can carry two long guns and two handguns simultaneously. The handguns are carried concealed, while the long guns are visible, one in hand and one on the back, and pedestrians and police react to a weapon that is on show; a concealment animation plays before entering a store. Additional weapons are not lost; instead, they are stored in the player's vehicle trunk and can be swapped at any time by returning to the vehicle.
The carry limit encourages players to think strategically about their loadout before entering a mission or confrontation, rather than having immediate access to an entire arsenal at all times.
Tab | Contents | Cycle Button |
|---|---|---|
Weapons | Pistols, rifles, shotguns, SMGs, melee weapons currently carried on person | R1 / RB |
Gear | Body armor, throwables (grenades, molotovs), first aid | R1 / RB |
Equipment | Phone, binoculars, camera, special items | R1 / RB |
The core shooting mechanics have been refined with improved weapon handling, recoil patterns, and hit feedback. Each weapon category has distinct characteristics that affect accuracy, rate of fire, and recoil behavior.
Players can fire weapons while swimming. This allows for combat in the water, whether during a chase through Vice City's canals, an encounter near a marina, or while approaching a target from the ocean. The types of weapons usable while swimming are limited to pistols and compact firearms.
Vehicle combat has been substantially expanded. The improvements affect both the player's ability to fight from vehicles and the variety of combat scenarios involving cars, trucks, and boats.
Drive-by shooting now includes the ability for characters to stand up and shoot from car windows, rather than being limited to awkwardly aiming from a seated position. Additionally, players can fire from the beds of pickup trucks, opening up new tactical possibilities during high-speed chases and ambushes.
Feature | Description | New to Series |
|---|---|---|
Stand-and-shoot from windows | Characters lean out and stand from car windows for better firing angles | Yes |
Truck bed shooting | Fire weapons from the beds of pickup trucks flatbed vehicles | Yes |
Driver shooting | Driver can fire pistols while steering with one hand | Not new |
Vehicle trunk weapon storage | Excess weapons stored in vehicle trunk, swappable at any time | Yes |
Players can crouch to reduce their visibility and noise profile, allowing them to approach enemies or bypass encounters without triggering full combat. The Extended Look added non-lethal takedowns inside gunfights: a limb shot can take an enemy out of the fight, and the aiming reticle shows red for a kill and yellow otherwise, giving a live readout of lethality.
Several mechanics often listed among the game's combat features trace to leaked 2022 development footage rather than to Rockstar's official material: zip-tie restraints, using NPCs as human shields, surrendering to the police, a prone stance, switching the firing hand, dedicated weapon pickup animations, and carrying or looting bodies. This wiki does not treat them as confirmed. The non-lethal options shown in official material are the limb shots and reticle feedback described above.
Reports before the Extended Look described a separate slow-motion ability for each protagonist, listed below. The Extended Look itself showed a single Focus meter that drives a slow-motion state during gunfights, with vitals highlighting that marks a killshot in red and a disarming shot in yellow. Outside gunfights, Focus also reveals nearby objects and pursuing police. Rockstar has not said whether Focus works differently for Jason and Lucia, so the per-character descriptions below are unconfirmed.
Lucia Caminos possesses a slow-motion "focus" ability that activates during a single carefully aimed shot. When triggered, time slows briefly, allowing the player to place a precise shot on a target. This ability is particularly effective for headshots, disabling vehicles, or targeting specific weak points. The mechanic emphasizes precision and composure under pressure. This reflects Lucia's character as a calculated and resourceful criminal.
Jason Duval has a slow-motion ability that highlights enemy weak points during activation. When engaged, the camera briefly slows and key targets on enemies (such as exposed limbs, weapon hands, or armor gaps) are visually marked. This allows Jason to deal increased damage or disable enemies more efficiently. The mechanic suits Jason's more aggressive, confrontational personality and combat style.
Character | Ability Name | Effect | Best Used For |
|---|---|---|---|
Focus | Slow-motion single-shot precision aiming | Headshots, disabling vehicles, precise elimination | |
Weak Point Highlight | Slow-motion with enemy weak points visually marked | Crowd control, armored enemies, aggressive pushes |
The August 2026 showcase put several combat details on screen for the first time.
Weapons carry manufacturer brands and model numbers rather than generic class names; a Moreland 850 Shotgun is named on screen when Jason picks it up off the floor.
Some close-quarters struggles resolve through an on-screen choice between two buttons, including an escape for Lucia that ends with a heel to an assailant's face.
Walls break under force: during the police raid, one of Raymond's associates drives an officer through a wall.
No first-person mode was shown; first-person framing appears only down a weapon scope.
Mechanic | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Crouching | Confirmed | Reduces visibility and noise; usable in combat and stealth |
Stealth takedowns | Unconfirmed | Melee takedowns from behind; not detailed by Rockstar |
Noise management | Confirmed | Suppressed weapons and crouched movement reduce detection radius |
Non-lethal shots | Shown in the Extended Look | Limb shots take enemies out of a fight; the reticle shows yellow instead of red |
