Final Fantasy Resonance structures its world the old way: a walkable world map with towns and dungeons placed directly on it, crossed on foot, on chocobo-back, by ship routes between continents, and eventually by a freely controlled airship. The pieces unlock in stages as the journey advances.
A Walkable World Map
Towns and dungeons sit on a traversable world map, and the party walks between them. Coverage around the announcement framed this as the first time in many years that the series has put a new entry on that structure; treat the framing as press shorthand rather than an official claim, but the structure itself is confirmed. The developers said a world map and airship exploration were elements they were determined to include.
Exploration is rewarded off the beaten path. In preview builds, poking around the leads' home town revealed hidden passages with treasure chests waiting at the end, the kind of secret older 2D entries tucked into their maps. Enemy encounters in the field are random; the Combat page covers how battles begin and flow.
Chocobos
Chocobos can be ridden on the field. The Digital Deluxe edition's bonus pack includes the Magitek Armor Key, an item that changes the ridden chocobo's appearance into magitek armor; once claimed, the swap is toggled on from the item menu. Full edition contents are itemized at Editions and Pre-Order Bonuses.
The Airship
An airship joins the party's tools as the journey unfolds, and it is controlled directly on the world map. Official material is specific about what it adds: numerous dungeons, powerful foes, and events are reachable only by airship, and the party can land at spots that were previously visible but out of reach. A pre-order bonus item, the Magitek Airship Passkey, changes the airship's appearance into a magitek vessel.
Ships
Ships also exist, but they fill a different role. The developers said ships appear as transport for moving between continents rather than as a freely steerable vehicle, so sea travel works as a route between landmasses while the airship remains the open-ended ride.
Named destinations revealed so far, from Grandshelt to the Town of Mitra, are collected at Locations.
