Hellstone Statue

Added the sculpture weight and stated convention tour, the studio position that every symbol has a defined meaning, and dated notes on where it has not yet appeared
The Hellstone is the name given to a large statue that Larian Studios used to tease Divinity ahead of The Game Awards 2025. The grim sculpture became one of the most talked about marketing moments around the show.

In the run up to the show, a heavy statue appeared at a roadside in the Mojave Desert in California. The show's host, Geoff Keighley, shared location and tracking details, and fans traveled to photograph the sculpture in person. Its twisted design, a mass of fused bodies, gave no clear hint of which game it promoted.

Larian later named the site. Its head of publishing said he had wanted the piece at Joshua Tree, in the California desert, because he likes the place, and that the studio had two ambitions for the campaign: build a monolith, and put it in the desert.
With no game attached, the community guessed widely, linking the statue to several long awaited titles in the days before the show. The mystery steadily built anticipation ahead of the broadcast.
A day before the broadcast, a European trademark filing for the name Divinity surfaced, submitted by a law firm that had handled earlier Larian filings. That paper trail pointed many fans toward Larian before the on stage reveal.
Larian has since confirmed the shape of that leak from its own side. The studio said it had realised it did not own the web domains and social handles for its own games at the time, and its head of publishing acknowledged the community finding the logo trademark before the show, describing the internal reaction as a mix of anger and disappointment and saying the studio will be more careful in future.
During the show, the trailer ended on the same fused body design, tying the real world statue to the game. Larian named the sculpture the Hellstone and framed the hand built piece as a statement about craftsmanship and human artistry. For what followed, see The Game Awards 2025 Reveal and the Reveal Trailer.

The Hellstone campaign worked because it stacked several distinct hooks before the reveal. The physical sculpture in the desert gave the public something to travel to and photograph. The lack of any visible game logo or studio mark kept the guessing open across the gaming community for days. The trademark filing the day before the show then gave investigators a verifiable paper trail toward Larian, which built confidence in the leak right as the broadcast began. By the time the trailer ended on the same fused body design as the statue, the connection was already cemented.
Larian Studios framed the Hellstone as a piece of hand built craftsmanship, not as a marketing prop. The studio used the statue to make a point about human artistry around the launch, contrasting the physical work that went into the sculpture with how easy it is to dismiss promotional stunts. The piece itself was not destroyed at the show; it remained tied to the game as part of the announcement materials.
The origin is more mundane than the campaign made it look. The studio had grown anxious about the announcement leaking, decided that worrying about it was unproductive, and chose to build something that would pull attention away from any leak instead. Larian's head of publishing has described the shift from that paranoia to genuine excitement about the object, which the team was building while the announcement plans themselves were out of its hands. The show's host was on board immediately.
The carving is also not decorative. Larian has said it knows what every single thing on that stone means and intends to reveal those meanings over time, which puts the Hellstone in the same category as the buried audio and the crown markings discussed on the Reveal Trailer page: a deliberate puzzle laid down early rather than set dressing. The studio has added that it would have preferred the secret to hold longer than it did, while crediting the reporters who worked out what the statue was for and chose not to publish.
The Hellstone was not built to be scrapped once the broadcast ended. Asked where it had gone, director Swen Vincke said it is going to travel and that people will be able to see it at various conventions. He put its weight at 3,500 kilograms and noted, dryly, that it is therefore travelling slowly.
No convention appearance has been announced. Divinity was not announced, shown or nominated at gamescom 2026 in late August, and although Larian ran a booth at PAX West 2026 in early September, nothing from the game appeared there through the second day of the show.
