Dread Commanders are humans corrupted by Diablo and raised to rival the powers of Hell. They are the only enemy type Blizzard has named for Diablo V, and no individual Dread Commander has been identified.
Diablo V is an action role playing game in development at Blizzard Entertainment, announced at BlizzCon 2026 and scheduled for Spring 2029. It opens on a Sanctuary that has already fallen, with Diablo ruling from the throne of Westmarch and the player cast as the Heir to Westmarch.
Three Diablo V classes have been named: the returning Demon Hunter and Monk, and the all-new Plague Knight. Blizzard says these are only the first it will reveal, and it has given no total count.
The Plague Knight is the first all-new class announced for Diablo V, a heavily armoured figure described as the embodiment of walking death who spreads disease and then consumes it for power.
In Diablo V the Lord of Terror has already won. He rules Sanctuary from the throne of Westmarch, is present from the first moment of the game rather than waiting at the end of it, and treats the fallen world as a stepping stone to invading the Heavens.
The Terror Realm is described by the Diablo V team as Diablo's own corner of Hell, and the discovery that the player can enter it and survive is said to be where the story really begins.
Sanctuary in Diablo V is a world that has already lost. Blizzard describes it as living through its apocalypse rather than waiting for one, with the Western Continent overrun, no safe towns left, and the landscape itself no longer stable.
The caravan replaces towns and strongholds in Diablo V. It is a travelling band of survivors who act as vendors and companions, it can only move to places the player has already made safe, and the team says every sidequest comes from its members.
Diablo V is developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment and was described at its reveal as still early in development, with regular updates planned to start in 2027 ahead of a Spring 2029 window.
Blizzard says the Diablo V overworld, not only its dungeons, is procedurally generated, with terrain, points of interest, monsters and rewards able to change between visits and the fog of war rolling back each time the caravan moves.
The Heir to Westmarch is the player character of Diablo V, a fugitive in a fallen kingdom who carries a mysterious bond with Diablo that is both an insight into him and a vulnerability to him.
The Monk is a returning Diablo V class, described by Blizzard in a single sentence: it brings martial perfection back to Sanctuary, battering demons with fists and calling down holy power at range.
The Demon Hunter is a returning Diablo V class, described by Blizzard in a single sentence: it stalks the forces of Hell with twin crossbows, striking from the shadows and leaping across the battlefield.
Diablo V was announced on 12 September 2026 at BlizzCon 2026 in Anaheim, during the opening ceremony and then in a dedicated panel. No playable build was made available, so every published detail comes from the panel and the interviews around it.
Blizzard says Diablo V itemization is inspired by an earlier series entry, with returning gear sets and belts, larger items taking more inventory slots, a crafting system built on Runes and Runewords, and an experiment with stat requirements on gear.
