Diablo V is developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. It was announced on 12 September 2026 and, in Blizzard's own words, "is still early in development". The stated release window is Spring 2029, roughly two and a half years after the announcement.
Pre-launch article. Diablo V was announced on 12 September 2026 and is scheduled for Spring 2029. As of 13 September 2026 the game has been public for one day, no playable build has been shown, and Blizzard describes it as "still early in development". This page records what the team said about the project itself, including the subjects it declined to discuss.
Status at announcement
Blizzard framed the reveal as an opening rather than a preview: "Diablo V is still early in development, and this reveal marks the beginning of an ongoing conversation with the Diablo player community." The team also stated the broad ambition behind it: "We want to build a Diablo game that honors what players love while taking the series somewhere genuinely new."
Developers speaking at the show stressed that everything remains a work in progress and subject to change between the announcement and the Spring 2029 window. Specific examples of that hedging appear throughout the reveal: itemization features described as experiments, an inventory called an early look and not a final design, and class detail explicitly held back.
Why a sequel rather than an expansion
Executive Producer Matt Zitterman explained the decision to make a new entry:
"From the early stages of Diablo 5's development, we recognized that what we needed wasn't simply an expansion for Diablo 4, but a true sequel."
"During development, someone stuck a Post-it note in my office that read 'Best Campaign Ever,' and at some point, that became a core benchmark for the dev team."
"Our goal is to create an entry with the most intense combat feel of any Diablo to date."
On combat feel specifically, the team uses the internal watchword "Spectacle". Senior Art Director John Mueller introduced it and immediately hedged it: "we aren't at a stage to detail specifically what that means just yet." Like the team's other internal terms, it describes an approach and is not the name of a game system.
The update cadence
Blizzard gave one forward-looking commitment, and gave it as a plan: "Starting in 2027, we plan to share regular updates offering a closer look at our progress, the ideas guiding development, and features taking shape along the way."
The 2027 date is also where the team pointed when declining to detail class mechanics, saying it is "not quite at the stage to detail individual classes and mechanics just yet" and that from 2027 it plans to gradually reveal more concrete details. Between 13 September 2026 and that point, no further reveal has been scheduled publicly.

Subjects the team declined to discuss
These are refusals made on the record at or around the reveal, all dated 13 September 2026. They are recorded as refusals because a refusal is a firmer fact than silence.
