Diablo V is an action role playing game in development at Blizzard Entertainment, announced on 12 September 2026 at BlizzCon 2026 and scheduled for Spring 2029. It is set on a Sanctuary that has already fallen: the heroes of the past are gone, Diablo has won, and he rules from the throne of Westmarch. The player takes the role of the Heir to Westmarch, a fugitive who must build a caravan of survivors to cross a world their enemy is actively reshaping.

Pre-launch article. Diablo V was announced on 12 September 2026 and is scheduled for Spring 2029. As of 21 September 2026 no playable build has been shown, and Blizzard describes it as "still early in development". Almost everything recorded below comes from a single reveal panel, two announcement posts and a set of post-show developer interviews, and much of it is described by the team as an early idea rather than a specification.
Announcement and release window
Blizzard announced Diablo V during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony on Saturday 12 September 2026 and followed it with a dedicated panel the same afternoon. The announcement posts state plainly that "Diablo V is officially in development and coming Spring 2029", and the game's official website repeats the same window: "Diablo V is in development, coming Spring 2029."

Spring 2029 is a window, not a date. Blizzard has given no month, no quarter and no day, and it has paired the window with the statement that the game is still early in development. This wiki records the window verbatim and does not sharpen it. See BlizzCon 2026 reveal for how the announcement was staged and development and roadmap for what the team said about the road ahead.
Between the reveal weekend and 21 September 2026, Blizzard published nothing further about Diablo V: no new announcement post on its news site, no new video on the official Diablo channel, and no change to the copy on the game's website. The team's own stated next milestone is the start of regular development updates in 2027.
Platforms
As of 21 September 2026, Blizzard has announced no platforms for Diablo V. No platform is named in either announcement post, in the reveal panel, or anywhere on the game's official website, and coverage of the reveal affirmatively noted the absence rather than merely omitting it. No developer named a platform on the record at any point during the reveal or the interviews around it.
Platform lists for Diablo V that appear elsewhere do not come from Blizzard. This page will state platforms only when Blizzard names them.
The one related remark on the record comes from the panel. While showing the concept inventory screen, Senior Game Director Joe Shely said the team has solutions for controller players who might worry about moving multi-slot items around. That is a statement about input, not about platforms, and it names none.
Premise
The premise the team returned to repeatedly is that the player arrives after the defeat rather than before it. Senior Game Director Joe Shely put it this way at the reveal:
"The heroes are gone, Sanctuary has fallen, and Diablo has won."
"For the first time, you won't be fighting to stop Diablo from taking Sanctuary; you'll enter a world where he already has, with no towns and safe places waiting to protect you."
Production Director Tiffany Wat framed the consequence as a question the game is built around:
"That changes everything: how you survive, what powers you're willing to claim, and what you're willing to sacrifice."
"At the heart of Diablo 5 is the simple question: what must you become when the world has already fallen?"
Blizzard's announcement post describes the situation in the same terms: "Diablo has conquered Sanctuary, a stepping stone to invading the Heavens. Now from the throne of Westmarch, he wields Sanctuary's people and souls as weapons in the Eternal Conflict." The post also stresses that Diablo "is no longer a distant threat waiting at the end of the journey", but "present from the moment Diablo V begins, shaping the story, the world, and your path through it".
Setting
The revealed setting is the Western Continent, which Shely described as "essentially greater Westmarch", overrun and turned into "an outpost of hell". Senior Art Director John Mueller placed the game a century after the events players last left Sanctuary in, and added a second, unexplained gap on top of it:
"Diablo 5 is set in an era 100 years after Mephisto's defeat. And at the time the game begins, there is an additional 'Lost 7 Years'. The process of finding out what happened during that time and what was lost forms an important part of the storytelling in this title."
The world itself is no longer stable. See Sanctuary for the state of the world, the Terror Realm for the place the story is said to turn on, and the procedural world for how the landscape is described as shifting between visits.

Multiplayer
Multiplayer has been confirmed in outline only. In a group interview after the show, Senior Game Director Joe Shely said: "Like Diablo 4, it is a game that you can play solo or multiplayer, however you please, and you should be able to play all of the content with your friends." Nothing more was given. Whether other players share the same generated overworld, whether there is any shared-world or always-online requirement, and how groups form were all left for closer to release, so the structure of multiplayer remains one of the subjects the team has declined to detail.
What has been revealed
Classes: three have been named, the Demon Hunter, the Monk and the all-new Plague Knight. Blizzard says these are "only the first of the classes we'll reveal".
The caravan: a travelling band of allies who serve as vendors and companions, replacing towns and strongholds entirely.
Itemization: stated as inspired by an earlier entry in the series, with returning gear sets, belts, a crafting system built on Runes and Runewords, and an experiment with stat requirements on gear.
The procedural world: the overworld as well as its dungeons is described as procedurally generated, re-fogging each time the caravan moves.
Dread Commanders: humans corrupted by Diablo and raised to rival the powers of Hell, the only enemy type named so far.
What the team declined to discuss
Several subjects were put on the record as deliberately not being discussed at the reveal. These are refusals, not oversights. They were made on 12 and 13 September 2026 and re-checked on 21 September 2026:
Platforms. Never named by anyone, on stage or afterwards.
Live service, post-launch plans and monetization. Executive Producer Matt Zitterman said "Today, we aren't getting into specific details regarding Diablo 5's live service or post-launch plans."
Individual class mechanics. Explicitly deferred, with the team saying it is "not quite at the stage to detail individual classes and mechanics just yet" and pointing at 2027 for more concrete detail.
Class count. Shely said the game will "launch with more classes than ever before" but gave no number.
Engine, multiplayer structure and loot filters. The engine and loot filters were not stated. Multiplayer was later confirmed in outline (solo or multiplayer, all content playable with friends) with its structure explicitly deferred; no shared-world or online requirement has been described either way.
