The Gilded Gauntlet

Expanded practical gameplay guidance
The Gilded Gauntlet is Ambrus's confrontation quest. Disrupting his court activities eventually draws an invitation to a duel. Before answering it, Coen can take an optional detour that poisons Ambrus and changes the risks of the scene before the fight.
Detail | Requirement |
|---|---|
Starting point | Maragir Village public square |
Unlock | Complete enough activities in Ambrus's territory to anger him, then approach the crosses in the square. |
Availability | Day and night |
Listed time cost | Check the current hourglass prompts. The duel consumes time on Steam from Update 1.1. |
Missable | Yes |
At the public square, a cutscene delivers the invitation. Erdene then offers to lead Coen to Iulian Cordin's hunting lodge. Following her immediately costs one time segment and begins The Bittersweet Toast. Refusing the escort does not itself remove the optional visit: the lodge can be reached independently.
Cordin's plan poisons the blood Ambrus will drink. Completing The Bittersweet Toast makes the duel easier by causing continuing health loss during the fight. Going straight to the duel leaves Ambrus at full strength. The poisoning plan also makes the blood offered to Coen dangerous, so the later drinking choice matters.
When ready, travel to the ruined watchtower south of Maragir Village and ring the bell. Ambrus presents Cordin before the fight. Do not treat accepting the drink as a free heal if Cordin's blood has been poisoned.
Response to the blood offer | Consequence |
|---|---|
Drink with Ambrus | Coen feeds on Cordin. If the poisoning plan was completed, Coen is poisoned too. |
Refuse on the grounds that Coen does not drink from humans | Ambrus kills Cordin. The poisoned blood still affects Ambrus if the plan was completed. |
Challenge Ambrus for letting a peasant drink first | Coen avoids drinking while Ambrus drinks. |
Say the offer is untrustworthy | Coen avoids drinking while Ambrus drinks. |
Cordin's survival also depends on choices made in The Bittersweet Toast. Avoiding his blood in this scene does not by itself guarantee that he lives.
Ambrus uses fast sword combinations and Shadowstep to change position. Block his readable sword swings to build charges, then use the opening for an active ability. When he backs away for an unblockable attack, stop trading hits and watch for the dodge timing.
Breaking the last red node on his health bar triggers a dangerous multidirectional flurry surrounded by a red aura. Keep enough stamina to respond to that transition. If the poison is active, its damage continues while Coen defends, so surviving an exchange can be more useful than chasing every possible hit.
Decision | Result |
|---|---|
Drain Ambrus | Raises Corruption, grants Scarlet Shield and opens the Anachora conversation. |
Kill Ambrus directly | Ends his life without receiving Scarlet Shield from this encounter. |
Invite him in after draining | He remains as a voice in Coen's mind and can help during the final fight. The first invitation of this kind awards Realmwalker. |
Refuse the invitation | Leaves his soul in Anachora. |
Inviting him in follows draining his blood; it is not the same action as leaving him physically alive. Scarlet Shield belongs to the night toolkit described on Vampire Combat and Night Abilities.
Reward | Condition |
|---|---|
500 XP and 1 skill point | Quest completion |
Scarlet Shield | Drain Ambrus rather than kill him directly |
Loot the duel site before leaving. The wider progression from the boyars to Brencis is covered on Endings, and the other court confrontations are The Lunar Game and The Cycle of Love.
The invitation into Coen's mind is available after draining Ambrus during The Gilded Gauntlet. Saving him for the final Greifberg Castle assault does not preserve that invitation: the castle fight allows the blood-drain choice only at night, but not the invitation. His aid against Brencis is temporary, since Brencis can reabsorb the power and turn it against Coen.
