Saint Mihai
September 23, 2026 at 07:08 AM
Added what Mihai tells Coen before he dies (a dawnwalker, betrayed and chained under the cathedral), the two routes into A Monk and a Saint, the boss fight and its rewards; settled the quest title
Saint Mihai is one of only two saints venerated in Vale Sangora, the other being Saint Tyna. The valley's in-world chronicle, written in the voice of Albertus Taurinus, records that Mihai lived many centuries before the game's 1347 setting and was born a pagan. According to the early chroniclers quoted there, he became a fearless knight and died fighting a horrible monster, and a shrine was raised at the site of his death.
The chronicle's account of a pilgrimage to that shrine is the closest thing to a first-hand description of him that has been published: "As I was praying, I suddenly heard a blood-curdling howl. I told myself it must have been a wolf... Even though deep down, I knew that the truth was different." The legend, in other words, is presented from the start as a story with something unresolved underneath it.
Mihai is also named as the patron saint of the cathedral in Svartrau, the valley's capital. The same chronicle describes Svartrau Cathedral as grand but dark and foreboding, reputed to be haunted, with few willing to walk its long naves after dark. Its archives are where the chronicler spent most of his time in the city.
What was preview material before release is now playable content, and the shape of it held up. The route to Mihai is a quest that sends Coen after a scholar in Svartrau and then into the cathedral, with the crypts outside the building visible long before the game will let him decide which one is the saint's. The quest is A Monk and a Saint, the name used by the game's own quest data and by walkthroughs of the shipped game; a few early write-ups printed its halves the other way round.
One walkthrough of the shipped game describes two ways in, and taking one locks out the other. The first follows the side quest Night Terrors, which ends in a cave beside the cathedral courtyard and runs straight into the search for the saint's grave. The second starts with a letter that reaches Coen once his infamy climbs to its fourth rank and sends him to a monk named Albertus in The Middens, then through the cathedral library by way of the deacon's errand, A Dubious Gift. Either way, the right grave is the one of five in the courtyard north of the cathedral that bears Mihai's symbol, which appears on his armour in a fresco and on the base of a chalice in the cathedral treasury. The route chosen does not change the reward.

The two-halves-of-the-day structure documented before release is intact. The cathedral is open to the public in daylight, which is when the questioning and the library research happen, and it is entered by climbing the belltower scaffolding at night. Xanthe is inside on the night route and is dangerous enough that avoiding her is the recommended approach. Studying the frescoes on the interior roof reveals the saint's mark, which is what finally identifies the right crypt.
Mihai himself is found walled up rather than laid to rest, still animate after centuries, and carrying the sword the quest is after. He attacks on sight, shouting the name Tobias at an opponent he seems to mistake Coen for. Who Tobias is has not been documented as of September 2026. The encounter cannot be avoided if the quest is to be finished.
The fight is listed as Mihai, Patron of the Cathedral. He uses ordinary sword attacks backed by a large pool of health, and one walkthrough recommends level 25 or higher. Beating him ends the quest with the Broken Sword of St. Mihai, 1,000 XP and a skill point, and he tells Coen to take the sword to the uriashi blacksmith.
The game's own journal, written in Coen's voice, records what the encounter revealed. The valley's saint was never a Christian saint but a pagan, and the dragons of the legend were not dracones but vrakhones, meaning vrakhiri. Nor was he dead. Before he dies, Mihai tells Coen that he was betrayed, chained up and left to rot in the catacombs beneath the cathedral. He calls himself a dawnwalker and says that Coen is one too. The quest's closing entry adds that he spoke of someone called the Augurs, and the game offers nothing beyond the name.
That makes Mihai the second dawnwalker the game names, on his own word. The journal presents it as Mihai's claim rather than a narrator's statement, and it does not explain how he became one. His centuries walled up alive, unable to die or break his chains, are the only account of what the condition meant for him.
The blade Mihai was buried with is the reason most players come looking for him. It is silver, which matters because the vrakhiri are vulnerable to the metal, and coverage of the shipped game treats the finished weapon as the strongest sword available. Getting there is a chain rather than a pickup.
Step | What happens |
|---|---|
Defeat Mihai | His coffin yields the broken sword, printed in guides as both The Broken Sword of St. Mihai and St. Mihai's Silver Sword. It is usable in that state but weak for its rarity. A note in the coffin starts the next quest. |
Forge It Anew | Three sword shards are hidden in kobold caves across the valley. Each cave holds markings that map the other two, so only the first has to be found by exploration. One of the three has already been looted and has to be recovered from a vampire lord's camp instead. |
The uriashi smith | A hornless uriashi hermit with a rune-powered forge in the far north-west reforges the blade once all three shards are in hand. She will not discuss it before the quest is active. |
Tempering | She then points Coen to a nearby cave sealed by red growth, where an ancient site guarded by spectral enemies and a mini-boss called an Echoing Anger can temper the reforged weapon. |
The finished blade | The result is a legendary greatsword, the Imbued Sword of St. Mihai, with heavy bonus damage against supernatural enemies, a raised critical rate, and a weapon art built on wide sweeping strikes. Its level scales to Coen's at the point he obtains it. |
Everything in this section comes from guide coverage of the released game rather than from studio material. Two independent sources describe the same chain, which is why it is stated directly here, while the details that only one of them records are left out. See Equipment and Crafting and Quest System.
One further thread runs off this one. Reforging the sword is reported to be what prompts a courier to bring Coen the component list for a legendary armour set, which makes the saint's crypt the starting point for both halves of the best-documented endgame loadout.
How Mihai became a dawnwalker, and whether the game means the word in exactly the sense it applies to Coen. As of September 2026 the only source is Mihai's own claim, recorded in Coen's journal.
Who the Augurs are. The quest's closing journal entry names them and says nothing more.
Whether reaching him counts as main-story content. The game draws no such line in general, and walkthroughs file the quest as a side quest.
Whether the crypt beneath the cathedral is the tomb the legend refers to. The chronicle places his shrine at the site of his death, not in the city.
