Healing

Expanded practical gameplay guidance
Healing depends on Coen's current form. Food and restorative items support his human form during the day. At night he can restore health by feeding or drinking blood vials. Keep supplies for both forms because their recovery items and quickslot sets differ.
Coen does not normally regenerate health in human form. Food provides recovery while exploring, and crafted ointments, salves and balms provide additional healing. Assign a restorative to a quickslot before combat so it can be used immediately.
Restorative | Materials |
|---|---|
Minor Mending Ointment | 1 Canteen of Water and 2 Ribwort Plantain |
Mending Ointment | 1 Linseed Oil and 2 Comfrey |
The Mending Ointment recipe can be found in the house visited during Enter Not in the prologue. Read recipes and collect their materials before relying on a particular consumable.
Witchcraft can spend health as well as Activation Charges. Frugal Witchcraft restores health based on a hex's casting cost when an affected enemy is defeated. Font of Life is a separate quest reward that can provide human-form regeneration; choosing it has consequences for the other Font rewards.
Voracious Bite damages a target and restores Coen's health. It can be used during combat, but it uses Activation Charges and has a cooldown. Feeding on animals gives an alternative to attacking civilians, though animal blood is less efficient for healing than human blood.
Blood vials can be consumed only in vampire form at night. Human, animal and vrakhiri blood provide different restoratives. Drinking blood also raises Corruption, whether the blood comes from feeding or a vial.
Option | Use |
|---|---|
Closing Wounds | Provides passive Vampiric Health regeneration at night. |
Scarlet Shield | Can heal Coen after a Perfect Block. The ability is obtained from Ambrus. |
Restores health directly while attacking a target. | |
Blood vials | Portable nighttime healing when feeding is inconvenient. |
Nighttime health also represents hunger. Starting a conversation while critically hungry can cause Coen to lose control and drain the person he is speaking to. Restore health before approaching an important NPC instead of waiting until the conversation starts.
The Equipment menu maintains separate day and night quickslot sets. Check both sets after acquiring a new healing item so the correct restorative is available when Coen changes form.
Poison from drinking poisoned vrakhir blood lasts for a number of time segments. This can occur after poisoning Ambrus and then choosing to drink from him. Advance time at a shrine, or reach the next day, to clear the nighttime effect; the vampire poison does not transfer to the human health bar.
Poison from ordinary enemies, including Salamanders, instead wears off in real-time seconds. Use appropriate healing or Voracious Bite while waiting for it to expire if health is low.
Select a consumable in the inventory and use the quickslot assignment input. The default PC command is S followed by a slot key from 1 to 4. On PlayStation use Triangle and a D-pad direction; on Xbox use Y and a D-pad direction. Controls can be rebound. Healing salves and blood vials are useful assignments for their respective forms.
