Dawnwalkers

Initial comprehensive article creation
A Dawnwalker is a being who exists between human and vampire. The name comes from their dual nature — they carry traits of both worlds and can walk in both daylight and darkness, something full vampires cannot do.
Coen is the only known Dawnwalker. He was created when someone attempted to turn him into a vampire, but the silver poisoning accumulated in his body from years of working in mines disrupted the process. Instead of completing the transformation, the turning stalled partway through, leaving Coen with the abilities and weaknesses of both sides.
Under normal circumstances, turning a human into a vampire requires a specific ritual. The vampire must pull out one of their own teeth and use it to pierce the target's heart. When the process works correctly, the human becomes a full vampire — gaining immortality, enhanced strength, and vulnerability to sunlight.
Coen's case was different because the silver in his blood acted as a contaminant. Silver is toxic to vampires, and Coen had spent so many years breathing silver dust and handling raw ore that it had become part of his biology. When the turning process encountered the silver, it couldn't finish. The result was something that neither humans nor vampires had a name for.
A Dawnwalker's abilities are split across the day/night cycle:
During the day, Coen is effectively human. He uses swordplay and hex magic — bloody inscriptions on his skin that activate combat abilities. His health doesn't regenerate on its own, and he needs to eat food to heal. He can interact normally with people and pursue diplomatic solutions.
At night, Coen shifts toward his vampire nature. He fights with claws instead of a sword and gains access to vampiric powers: Shadowstep (teleportation), Plane Shift (wall and ceiling traversal), and the ability to bite enemies to drain blood and regenerate health. He is faster and more dangerous, but he must rely on stealth to avoid being exposed.
The Dawnwalker state is not purely advantageous. Coen's blood craving is a constant threat. As his hunger grows, his self-control weakens. If the craving reaches critical levels, he can involuntarily drain an NPC during a conversation, potentially killing them and locking off entire questlines. Managing hunger is a persistent gameplay concern.
Coen also doesn't get the full benefits of either side. He's weaker than a full vampire at night and more vulnerable than a normal human during the day, since his hybrid biology carries liabilities from both species. The silver in his system may protect him from further vampire influence, but it's also part of what keeps him in this unstable middle state.
Based on what's been revealed, Dawnwalkers are extremely rare — possibly unique to Coen's specific circumstances. The combination of silver poisoning and a vampire turning is unlikely to repeat itself. This makes Coen something of an anomaly in the world, which shapes how both humans and vampires react to him.
