Wyvern

Initial version: comprehensive Wyvern mount article
The Wyvern is a temporary mount in Crimson Desert and the only rideable flying reptile classified as a Fleeting Companion. With a staggering 324 Attack (the highest of any temporary mount) and 500 Health, the Wyvern is an apex aerial predator that turns its rider into a devastating force on the battlefield. Unlike the permanently summonable Blackstar Dragon, the Wyvern is a one-time ride that cannot be stabled, recalled, or saved for later use.
Finding and mounting a Wyvern is one of the most thrilling experiences in Crimson Desert. These massive winged reptiles are rare, dangerous, and require considerable skill to subdue. Once mounted, however, the Wyvern grants true flight capabilities, allowing the rider to soar above the landscape and rain destruction on enemies below.
The Wyvern boasts the highest Attack stat of any temporary mount in the game, combined with a substantial health pool:
Stat | Value |
|---|---|
Health | 500 |
Stamina | 100 |
Attack | 324 |
Speed | 1 |
Acceleration | 1 |
Handling | 1 |
Jump Power | 1 |
Type | Flying |
The Wyvern's 324 Attack is unmatched among temporary mounts, exceeding even the Gristle Wolf's 280 Attack. Its 500 Health provides a solid buffer, though it falls short of the Gristle Wolf's 1,743 HP. Note that the Wyvern has no listed Defense stat, which may mean it takes full damage from all incoming attacks. This makes the Wyvern a glass cannon of sorts: extremely powerful offensively but vulnerable if enemies manage to hit it.
As a Flying type mount, the Wyvern grants full aerial mobility. While riding, you can ascend, descend, and turn freely in three dimensions. The Wyvern flies at considerable speed and altitude, allowing you to cross terrain that would be impassable on foot or horseback. This includes flying over mountains, rivers, canyons, and fortified walls.
The Wyvern's flight is limited by its Stamina pool. Sustained flying drains stamina over time, and performing aerial attacks or sharp maneuvers costs additional stamina. When the Wyvern's stamina is depleted, it will begin to descend and eventually land. Managing your stamina budget during flight is essential for getting the most out of each Wyvern ride.
The Wyvern's flight mechanics differ from the Blackstar Dragon in that the Wyvern has no cooldown timer and no restriction on flight duration beyond stamina. However, as a temporary mount, the Wyvern cannot be re-summoned once you land and dismount.
The Wyvern is one of the most challenging temporary mounts to subdue. Its high health pool, devastating attacks, and flight capability make the fight punishing:
Locate a Wyvern in the wild. These creatures are rare and tend to inhabit remote mountainous and elevated regions of Pywel.
Engage the Wyvern in combat. Use ranged attacks and projectile weapons to deal damage while it is airborne. When it lands, switch to melee for heavier damage.
Dodge its sweeping tail attacks and breath/fire attacks carefully. The Wyvern's 324 Attack means a single hit can deal catastrophic damage.
Continue fighting until the Wyvern collapses into a stunned state on the ground.
Press the mount prompt (Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox) quickly to climb onto the Wyvern's back before it recovers.
Preparation: Bring your best equipment, a full stock of healing items, and consider investing in high-damage ranged skills. The fight against a Wyvern is essentially a mini-boss encounter, and coming unprepared will likely result in a quick death.
The Wyvern is a temporary mount (Fleeting Companion). This means:
It cannot be registered at any stable or recalled through the mount menu.
It cannot be equipped with any mount gear.
It does not gain experience or level up.
Once you dismount or land, the Wyvern becomes hostile and will attack you.
If the Wyvern is killed during your ride (by enemy archers, for example), you will fall and take significant damage.
Players often confuse the Wyvern with the Blackstar Dragon, as both are flying reptile mounts. The following table highlights the key differences:
Feature | Wyvern | Blackstar Dragon |
|---|---|---|
Mount Type | Temporary (Fleeting Companion) | Permanent (registerable) |
Health | 500 | 2,500 |
Attack | 324 | 50 |
Summoning | Cannot be summoned | Summonable with 15-min timer, 50-min cooldown |
Equipment | None | Supports mount gear |
How to Obtain | Subdue wild Wyvern through combat | Story quest reward |
Leveling | No leveling | Gains experience and unlocks skills |
The Wyvern has far more raw attack power than the Blackstar Dragon but cannot be kept or recalled. The Dragon is a permanent companion with vastly more health and the ability to equip gear and level up, but it operates on a 15-minute use timer with a long cooldown. Each serves a different purpose: the Wyvern is an opportunistic powerhouse, while the Dragon is a strategic asset.
The Wyvern's aerial attacks are devastating. While flying, you can trigger the Wyvern's own attack patterns using RT/R2, which include swooping claw strikes, tail lashes, and diving attacks that deal massive area-of-effect damage to enemies on the ground. Your character can also use their own weapons and abilities from the saddle.
The combination of flight and the Wyvern's 324 Attack makes it arguably the most powerful temporary combat mount in the game. You can strafe enemy positions from the air, dive-bomb clusters of soldiers, and retreat to altitude to avoid counterattacks. The main limitation is stamina; each aerial attack costs stamina, so you need to balance offense with flight time.
Prepare for the Wyvern fight as you would for a boss encounter. Its 324 Attack is lethal, and its 500 HP means you are in for a long fight.
Use ranged attacks during the aerial phases of the fight. The Wyvern spends significant time airborne before landing, giving you windows to deal damage from a safe distance.
Once mounted, use the Wyvern's flight to scout the area or complete objectives that would be difficult to reach on foot.
Manage your stamina carefully while flying. Running out of stamina in midair forces you to land, and landing near enemies can be dangerous.
The Wyvern is a rare spawn. If you find one, consider whether the fight is worth the risk and resources. Make sure you have a specific use planned for the flight.
Be cautious about dismounting at high altitude. Falling from a great height without a safe landing will deal heavy fall damage or kill your character.
Riding a Wyvern registers its entry in the Fleeting Companions section of the Knowledge Journal.
The Wyvern has the highest Attack stat (324) of any temporary mount in Crimson Desert, making it the most offensively powerful Fleeting Companion.
Unlike the Blackstar Dragon, the Wyvern has no time limit on its ride duration beyond its stamina pool.
Wyverns are two-legged winged reptiles (as opposed to four-legged dragons), consistent with traditional fantasy classifications.
The Wyvern is one of only a few temporary mounts with the Flying type, alongside the Kuku Bird Hatchling (which glides rather than truly flies).
