The Greymanes are an honorable warband originally from Pailune, a harsh alpine land in the northernmost reaches of Pywel. They are led by Kliff and stand in direct opposition to the Black Bears. Their bond is the emotional heart of Crimson Desert's story.
Marketing Director Will Powers described them: "They're the good guys. They have staunch moral compasses. They're defending this region. They're all about good moral character." Officially, the Greymanes are "a group of warriors who oppose those who would abuse their power to subjugate and exploit the weak, determined to preserve peace and unity in the land."
Fextralife describes the Greymanes as "warriors who safeguard Pailune," composed of people from diverse backgrounds and abilities who accept dangerous tasks that others refuse. Their reputation extends across the broader Pywel region.
The Greymanes served under the great leader Gian (romanized as "Jian" in most English-language sources), who unified the Pailune region and brought peace. Gian's vision was to protect the innocent and ensure that no faction could subjugate the people of Pailune through military force. Under his leadership, the Greymanes became "warriors renowned for their swordsmanship and their reputation for helping others," serving as peace enforcers who roamed the continent fulfilling protective missions.
Gian's mission extended beyond mere politics. Alustin, the alchemist from the Library of Providence, reveals that stopping the chaos threatening the Abyss was once Gian's mission. This suggests that the Greymane leader understood a cosmic, supernatural threat facing Pywel that went beyond the factional conflicts on the surface. With Gian's death, this responsibility falls to Kliff.
The game's story begins just after the Greymanes have been shattered. Gian is assassinated by the Black Bears, and with the great leader's death, Pailune, once unified, is plunged into chaos. The Black Bears, led by Myurdin, launch a devastating ambush in the deep of night. The attack shatters the Greymanes completely: members are killed or scattered across the continent, ushering in what Fextralife describes as "an age of violence and savagery."
During the ambush, several key Greymanes are seen fighting for survival. Oongka is shown battling multiple Black Bears simultaneously in a cutscene. Yann engages Black Bears before being kicked off a cliff. Kliff fights Myurdin directly at the Hills of No Return in Hernand during the main quest "In Ashes." The fight is unwinnable by design; Kliff is overwhelmed, stabbed repeatedly, and thrown into the Nas River. He survives and becomes determined to reunite the survivors.
Rebuilding the Greymanes "isn't just about revenge against the Black Bears; it's about ensuring that Gian's vision for Pailune doesn't die completely." The Greymanes are Kliff's family "in all but name," and restoring them is both a personal and ideological mission.

The Greymanes operate by a strict moral code. They are described as "committed to peace and willing to sacrifice themselves to protect the innocent." This code is enforced through gameplay: if the player fails to provide for their troops or makes choices that go against Greymane morals, companions may lose loyalty or even leave the group.
The Companion Trust system tracks companion morale. Building trust through gifts, shared experiences, and fulfilling requests strengthens the bonds within the company. Kliff leads the rebuilding effort not just as a military commander, but as the person holding the group together emotionally. The Greymanes are his family in all but name, and their survival depends on his ability to keep them unified.
Playable flashback missions called companion backstory missions are unlocked by sharing meals or drinks with Greymane companions at camp. These missions reveal how the Greymanes first formed and the tragedies they've endured. They provide narrative context for each companion's backstory and deepen the player's understanding of Gian's original vision for the faction.
After losing Pailune, the Greymanes take refuge in Hernand and establish the Greymane Camp as their base of operations. The camp starts as a small tent settlement and can be rebuilt into a fortified base through a camp-building mechanic inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2's camp progression. See the dedicated Greymane Camp article for full details.
Camp construction requires lumber and stone obtained from liberating territories, gathering in the world, and completing faction missions. Upgrading the camp directly improves character stats, unlocks new skills, and expands the roster of available companions. Facilities include a food shop (run by vendor Ronie), Trading Center, farms, ranches, workshops, a Barber Shop, and a Dyehouse for cosmetic customization.
Greymane companions are managed through the Freesword Dispatch System, where they are called Freeswords. Each Freesword has individual stats: Health, Attack, Defense, Attack Speed, Movement Speed, and Critical Hit Chance. Different Freeswords have different specializations, and sending the right team to the right job is critical for success.
Freeswords can be dispatched on missions including building statues, recapturing blockaded forts, gathering resources, and clearing enemy outposts. Missions typically require 4 to 6 companions, run passively while the player explores, and reward currency, materials, or access to new areas. Dispatching Freeswords to enemy blockades weakens hostile bases, making them easier for the player to clear later.
The Greymanes maintain alliances with several factions across Pywel:
Ally | Relationship |
|---|---|
Lord of Calphade and active Greymane supporter. Oongka fights alongside his forces against Cassius Morten's rebellion. | |
House Celeste | One of the first faction alliances available. The player can liberate Root Hold from Gwen Kraber's forces and return it to House Celeste. |
Alchemist from the Library of Providence who reveals Gian's Abyss-related mission and provides guidance about the supernatural threat. | |
The White Crow Witch | Grants Kliff the Crow Wings gliding ability after the Black Bear attack. |
The Greymanes' primary enemy is the Black Bears, led by Myurdin. The Black Bears destroyed the Greymanes' home in Pailune and continue to pursue them across the continent. Their alliance with Cassius Morten in the Calphade rebellion extends their reach further, while other hostile factions like the Wolf Trackers and various bandit groups provide additional opposition as the Greymanes rebuild.
The Black Bears are not interested in upholding Gian's will. Their goal is to attain power in the political vacuum left by the former leader's death. Myurdin's philosophy of "only the powerful deserve everything" stands in direct opposition to the Greymanes' commitment to protecting the weak.
As a faction, the Greymanes can occupy specific locations throughout Pywel. Some landmarks appear in red on the map, indicating they have been blockaded by a hostile faction. Liberating these locations requires defeating the occupying soldiers and their general, which restores the area to the Greymanes and brings back resident vendors. This territorial system ties directly into camp progression and the Freesword Dispatch System, as dispatching Freeswords to blockaded locations softens them up before the player arrives.
