Sanctum of Mortification

Create Sanctum of Mortification article: Chapter 9 Veiled Witch story Sanctum, Blinding Flash reactor puzzle, Core of Mortification reward used in Kuku Gardening Pack crafting.
The Sanctum of Mortification is the sixteenth and final Sanctum in Crimson Desert. Unlike the fifteen other Sanctums, which are distributed across the four Witch Faction questlines of Wisdom, Kindness, Humility, and Strength, this one sits outside any Witch chain. It can only be cleansed as part of the Chapter 9 Main Questline, during the Veiled Witch quest.
Cleansing the Sanctum and then completing its reactor puzzle awards the Core of Mortification, a Sanctum Core used as a key ingredient in many of the strongest Kuku Pot crafts, including the Kuku Gardening Pack.

The Sanctum of Mortification sits in the northern edge of Demeniss, across the border from Tariv. Players reach it during Chapter 9 by crossing over Wiggling Hill from the east side of Tariv. Map-wise the site falls southeast of the Denn River and west of The Crimson Wall, in a stretch of land associated with Hexe Marie's territory. There is no useful fast travel point immediately next to the Sanctum the first time you visit, so the main quest typically leads you in on foot or on horseback from the Tariv side.
Progress the Main Questline into Chapter 9. The Sanctum of Mortification becomes available during the Veiled Witch questline, after earlier Chapter 9 objectives point you toward the sorcerer's territory north of Tariv. No Witch introduction is required: approaching the Sanctum before Chapter 9 will not let you interact with it, because the story flags that gate its reactor are not yet set.
Required abilities are the same set used at every other Sanctum: Blinding Flash for the reactor puzzle, plus Axiom Force and Force Palm for moving and seating the reactor cores. A Kuku Pot (or Enhanced Kuku Pot) is strongly recommended for carrying cores between pickup points.
The Sanctum of Mortification follows the same two-phase structure as the other fifteen Sanctums:
Liberate the grounds. Clear all Antumbra worshippers around the reactor. The area is counted as liberated only once every hostile is down, and the reactor will not respond to Axiom Force until then.
Collect both reactor cores. Two Reactor Core fragments are hidden in and around the ruins: one bound by Axiom Force and one requiring a Force Palm seat. You can temporarily seal each core inside the Kuku Pot if you need to carry them a long way or traverse tight spaces.
Restore the reactor. Return each core to its socket on the central reactor, seating it with Force Palm. Green particle swirls confirm a correct placement.
Watch the cutscene. Once both cores are locked in, the reactor powers up and a cutscene triggers. At this point the Sanctum is cleansed and the main quest objective advances. Do not fast travel away yet. The reward Core is gated behind the optional reactor puzzle below.
With the reactor powered up, walk around to its front dial and draw Blinding Flash. The dial is a circular face with a bright central gem, a smaller circular gem at the top, and a ring of square gems that rotate clockwise along the perimeter.
Pulse the Focus Light function on the central gem so that it lights up only during the instant a square gem passes beneath the small circular gem at the top of the dial. The transcript for the Kuku Pot crafting guide likens it to a rhythm game: every correctly timed pulse marks one square, and once every square has been resolved the puzzle is solved.
Single squares are resolved by a quick tap of Focus Light.
Grouped squares need a held Focus Light that stays on while the whole group passes beneath the top marker.
Any mistimed pulse or a light held too long resets the pattern, so expect to take a few passes to lock it in.
Solving the pattern dispenses the Core of Mortification from the top of the reactor. Hook it down with Axiom Force and add it to your inventory before leaving.
The Core of Mortification is a Sanctum Core crafting material, the Mortification entry in the same Core set as the Core of Temperance, Core of Absolution, Core of Veneration, and the other named Sanctum Cores. It is consumed when crafting several of the top-tier Kuku items, most notably the Kuku Gardening Pack, which is one of the most useful Kuku items in the game for harvesting Rubber, Palmar Leaves, and Palmar Beetles.
Because this Sanctum is story-locked behind Chapter 9, the Core of Mortification is typically the last Sanctum Core a player obtains. Any Kuku recipe that lists it as an ingredient cannot be crafted until the Veiled Witch questline reaches this step, even if the recipe itself was unlocked earlier by a different Witch.
None. Unlike every other Sanctum in the game, the Sanctum of Mortification does not reward a new Kuku Pot blueprint on completion. Its value to the Kuku Pot economy is indirect: the Core of Mortification it drops is the missing ingredient for recipes already unlocked from other Sanctums. For example, the Kuku Gardening Pack blueprint is granted by cleansing the Sanctum of Veneration in the Witch of Humility chain, but the craft cannot actually be completed until a Core of Mortification is brought back from this Sanctum.
Sanctum | Chain | Signature Core |
|---|---|---|
Witch of Wisdom | Core of Absolution | |
Witch of Humility | Core of Devotion | |
Witch of Humility | Core of Veneration | |
Witch of Humility | Core of Oblation | |
Sanctum of Mortification | Main Story, Chapter 9 Veiled Witch |
Do not fast travel away after the cleanse cutscene. The Core of Mortification only drops once you complete the Blinding Flash puzzle on the front dial, and missing it forces a longer detour later when you try to craft Kuku recipes that need it.
If you plan to craft the Kuku Gardening Pack at this Sanctum, bring the other required materials (Abyss Cell, Power Core, Peddler's Pack components) so you can go straight from the reactor to the Kilnden Workshop without another round trip.
Clear every Antumbra in range before starting to move cores. The Axiom Force cast is cancelled by incoming damage, which will drop a core at your feet and waste time.
The reactor puzzle is forgiving on retries. A missed rhythm does not lock you out; it just resets the sequence, so there is no penalty for treating it as practice.
Once the Sanctum is cleansed and the Core is collected, you can treat the site as a normal cleared location and return later for any optional chests you missed during the fight.
